Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

So is the Washington Street bridge reopening in May or July? This update seems to indicate both

May. The City of Somerville sent out an email today with corrections:

This is a message from the Somerville, MA Community Alert System.

Dear Community Member,

We are writing to let you know of important schedule changes for the ongoing GLX-related bridge closures.
-

On Monday, January 27, the Green Line Extension Project released an updated schedule for bridge closures in Somerville associated with GLX construction.

Most notably, the revised timeline estimates that the reopenings of all three bridges that are currently closed will be delayed. The Broadway bridge in Ball Square is now expected to open in July 2020, about four months later than anticipated, the Washington Street bridge will now reopen in May 2020, and the Medford Street bridge will now reopen in October. The School Street Bridge has not yet been closed, and the new schedule now shows it and the Medford St. bridge around the corner being closed concurrently for approximately four months in the summer and fall of 2020.

In his testimony before the MBTA’s Fiscal Management Control Board today, Mayor Curtatone made it clear that our community has had to shoulder a difficult burden during construction and that the City of Somerville is not only deeply disappointed by these delays but that additional assistance will be necessary to address the impacts. In response to today’s announcement, the City is working closely with the MBTA and MassDOT on strategies and resources to reduce construction impacts, including advocating for assistance with public safety and traffic management, support for local businesses affected by construction, and other measures to mitigate the effects of construction on the community.

More information about traffic detours and mitigation efforts will be provided when available. Constituents are encouraged to contact the 24/7 GLX hotline at (855) 459-4636 or info@glxinfo.com with questions or comments.

New GLX Bridge Closure Schedule

Washington St.: Expected to reopen in May 2020
Broadway: Expected to reopen in July 2020
School St.: Expected to close after Washington St. bridge is reopened in May 2020 and reopen in June 2021 (the School St. bridge will not close until the Washington St. bridge is reopened.)
Medford St.: Expected to reopen in October 2020

GLX officials still expect the project in full to be completed on time, by the end of 2021.

It would be nice for the statement to say something like -- due to the the unusually mild weather this winter*1 that the construction schedule has been advanced by 3 months*2

*1 -- this January is the warmest since the 1930's -- and that follows either the warmest or 2nd warmest December with minimal snow and ice -- let's take advantage of this "gift"

*2 -- Note this is not real -- just a simulation of what could be

There goes Whighlander, panicking about climate change again......

May have been mentioned here already, but the reason for the delay is, in part, due to hitting lots of bedrock that was surprisingly close to the surface. Slowed the laying down of the new drainage. Also, they are literally making up the construction schedule as they go so it is no surprise that they underestimated the bridge closing times. Has little to do with the weather. In fact, if the weather were worse we would be looking at more significant delays.

Shmessy -- I think January finished 3rd Warmest
that said the others on the top 5 list -- all from the 1930's except for 1913 at the top

But really -- with the lack of bad weather - -there should be some advance in things -- they must have planned in at least a couple of non-work or restricted-work days due to the expected weather which so-far we have not had to endure

Not an excuse, but worth noting that this project is taking a lot of cues from agile methodology rather than waterfall. Though they close the bridges and post Gantts to show the work to be done, they are really managing not one but 8-10 smaller projects and shifting their focus from month to month in response to unforeseen hiccups. So some areas (like everything from Lowell Street to Tufts) is ahead of schedule while others (everything between 28 and Broadway) are behind schedule. But just like when you download a bunch of files at once, you see the pace pick up after a few of the smaller file jobs are completed. That's why they say they are still on schedule though a bridge remains closed for 4 months longer than expected.

They’re deathly afraid of the Wayback Machine enabling folks to say “see, I told you so!” when things inevitably slide to the right.

Found the actual bid notice on the T's site for the Lechmere Viaduct repairs, detailing exactly what they'll be doing to the concrete viaduct portion from foot of Science Park station to Gilmore Bridge intersection.

Steel viaduct demo/replacement west of the intersection is under a separate (already awarded?) contract.

Looks like West of the intersection is considered part of GLX: https://cdn.mbta.com/sites/default/files/2020-01/2020-01-27-fmcb-G-green-line-extension-update.pdf

Stick, when & where are these from?
The ones with the "no enclosure" platforms seem (to me) to be about what we were most recently promised. (I reckon the "no enclosure" ones are the top two, Gilman Sq (top) & Union Sq)

The bottom two look like "Gilman, Originally" (with a boxy enclosure) and Lechmere, Originally (where the current design is more "canopy" than "glass box")

^ ignore the skyline. That is a view of Union square looking towards Porter along the Fitchburg line.

just looking at that link and it seems it's all from 5 years ago before the whole thing was canned and then stripped back.

Yeah, I haven't seen the first two before. They look like the current designs. The other two are old.

Document has 2015 stamped throughout
However -- its source might be even older than that as it mentions timelines beginning in 2013 proceeding forward without the interruption and reset which occurred 2 years ago

At Medford/Tufts they are drilling (earth auger-ing) this weekend for the piles that will hold back (the hillside of) Boston Ave.

Actually they may be doing this weekdays too since they build themselves a sort of earthen ledge that they can work from and let the CR run past.
