High Speed Tolls

I'll let somebody else take a stab at valuation, but you could carve out a 3 acre chunk west of Park Road and 21 acres east of Park Road (split by the elevated 95S->90E ramp).

Quick note on the actual toll barriers themselves: On my commute to Waltham Thursday, I noticed (for the first time) that they've turned on the toll bridge by New Balance (Brighton) as well as the bridge in Newton.

The bridge just before the Commonwealth Ave underpass is still inactive.

Just as long as its working in time for my annual drive to Hartford for Thanksgiving, then I'll be happy.

Huh, that would be a big improvement (albeit not worth $24M). Even when the Pike is clear I don't even bother using it because getting on 128 S is such a disaster there.

I'd have to think the reclaimed land would be too polluted to be seriously doable as housing though. It'd be a decent hike to Riverside and walking to Riverside isn't very pedestrian friendly.

If it were in Newton, it would be a different story... Weston is not going to be an easy place to build anything big.

There's been off-and-on study for years on a CR station next to Liberty Mutual. The T has never seen a warrant for it, but maybe the company would. It's a hike to Riverside even if they built out the path system to get in from the back. Without that, it's not walkable for commute purposes.

On another note - this project came out of nowhere! I found it in the CIP, but it's labeled as "out" and received no funding.

The bottom deck of the Tobin Bridge will have electronic tolling in December.

The usual $2.50 fare will be split to $1.25 each way.

Seems fair, since the Pike in Allston and Weston are buck-quarter too. Plenty of bitching this morning on the news about the free ride going away, but consistency and simplicity for all flat-fee (i.e. non- distance-based) tolls in the state is a good thing.

Are they going to do the same with the harbor tunnels?

Are they going to do the same with the harbor tunnels?
They theoretically should.

There are two reasons for having 1 way tolls:
1) it reduces time and cost of collection vs the revenue being collected
2) It can serve as a de-facto congestion charge

Boston is way too leaky--"back doors" into what would be our congestion zone are way too numerous--for it to be worth it to say we have #2, and in a e-toll world, #1 isn't relevant, so that leaves a "first do no harm" to not distort the roads with odd tolls.
