Kendal Square Residential

any new building that uses rough-cut stone gets a "kudos" from me

that is nice stone, agreed.

question, though. can anyone say what the purpose of the lattices jutting out from the top of the building is? if they are supposed to be decorative what is it that they are a reinterpretation of? am i right in thinking that i'm seeing a lot of this kind of artifact on newer buildings? (and if there really is no purpose to them is there anything the designers / developers could take to speed their recovery?)

some info

I can't find much on the construction but here are sone interesting links:

Classical organ:
Not since 1863 with the building of the great Boston Music Hall Organ (now in Methuen Memorial Music Hall) has there been a concert hall organ planned of such magnitude for the Boston area

Wait, are they moving an organ (from Arizona!) or building an organ for this place?

Both. If the earlier plans are still true they will have classic movies. In the summer they will remove a wall and be able to have movies and organ concerts outdoors. I won't guarantee my memory on this, this may have even been part of their Fan Pier proposal instead.

I'd like to point out this is really the work of only one man, Glenn A. KnicKrem. I was at a presentation where they wouldn't let him speak because he had already driven them crazy with his tireless pursuit of his goal. Also a good deal of the money will be his. We're lucky he moved here from California. This type of civic leadership is very rare these days in Boston. The last Bostonian to do this was David Stone and the New England Aquarium.

Wow, terracotta? That's daring.

It's the same type used at the nearby Vertex building at 675 W. Kendall, and the same type going up at 45 Province Street.

Nice to see that architects in Boston are discovering something besides pre-cast brick!

from march 30.... hhmmmm did this beat 45 Province with the terra cotta brick?

At a glance this reminded me of those silver bio-tech chimneys popping up all over town like miniature smokestacks.

Move along folks. Nothing to see here.

For streetscape and massing, I think the Bulfinch Triangle buildings do it better.
