It would be trivial to make it a gated stop. There's a natural choke point coming in from the landmark center. All you'd have to do is reroute the stairs coming down from Park Drive to be in front of the gates (or add a gate in front of the stairs).

You could even take out a couple spaces along the fence and add more fare gates so it doesn't bottleneck as much.

Yeah you'd need at least 6-7 gates, since the trains tend to arrive at the same time from both directions. Plus you often see people running to catch the train (often times myself included) once you see people spilling out into the Landmark Center. I would be pissed if I missed a train because all the gates were full of people exiting the station.

This could be mitigated if they opened up an entrance on the southbound side of Park Drive, so people coming from that direction could enter/exit on that side.
 
Fare gates are such an expense, a blockage and a hassle.
 
I was just curious as it seemed to be a fairly easy location to do it, and like prop joe I would prefer gates to front door only. It just seemed that if there were plans this would be a natural time to do it.

Yeah, boarding a bus is so much smoother than a subway. They should cut the fare gates at underground stations too!
 
The alternative to fare gates isn't front door only. That's stupid. The alternative is all door boarding with POP.

No fare gates to block access to and from the platform. No awkward pedestrian flow conflicts. Full use of all egresses. One shared gathering space instead of segregated "paid" and "outer" partitions. Best of all: dozens of millions of dollars saved, not spent on overpriced, vendor-locked, unreliable fare gate hardware.

And if there's a grade-change involved, having those multiple mezzanines/platforms just doubles the expense of ADA-compliance.
 
Given that Shaws is rated one of the worst supermarkets in the USA, perhaps Wegmans can force them to close.

Imagine another 12-18 story building where the Shaws is located.... would make for one fantastic street wall all the way down Boylston.

Ive been hoping they would close for years. Maybe thats why Samuels is putting in wegmans so shaws will close and they can get that site too, I hope so.
 
Wow, I was going to say I knew of worse supermarkets. But then I realized it was Pathmark in NJ.

RE: Wegmans: They do huge lunch business. Giant seating area and extensive fresh food.

Just because the MBTA has tricked you into thinking youre choices are a punch in the face or a kick in the groin, doesnt mean its the only way.

Lest you forget every D line stop has POP validation machines to allow all door boarding.
 
Overall, I really like it, but the Deconstructivist shards on the roof need to go. It's just trashing the original building for the sake of a worn gimmick.

Yes, BB&B is being chopped to carve out the new spaces, but it looks like they might be invited back from the render/elevation that shows a store called "Blankets and Towels." I know first-hand that renders can't be taken at face value for anything, but man, that place is a staple in the Fenway. It's pretty much the only accessible affordable home store in all of Boston. There's definitely a reason they chose to represent that store in the elevation.
 
The Wegman's I frequent has seating in a second floor loft area which allows for some interesting people watching. Would be ideal with the "small" footprint.
 
Amazing project... one nitpick. The rendering of the market arcade on the front of the PNF is ghastly. It looks like they've just adapted the existing garage - tiling up the concrete supports - instead of demolishing it. Now I know that isn't true, because the location of current garage and the proposed market arcade don't even match up. So, tickle me that.
 
Samuels is brilliant...this is going to be fantastic. I have a feeling he will be borrowing from Eataly in New York...hopefully it will evoke the type of market feeling that exists in Europe.

I'm a fan of BB&B but I always marvel at how empty that place is most time outside of the holiday season. I was thinking that Target might sound the death knell for BB&B and maybe this is confirmation of that.
