I keep having that thought, too. The problem with the idea is that mostly the buildings surrounding the square are nit likely to do much about adding street level retail, which is the only way to really get the right vibe, even more than the neon. It's too bad, because the spot could be a great gateway to Bay Village and the theater district.

@DZH22: I wonder if the construction on Stuart Street has anything to do with the gerbil tube.

^ The shots with the steam rising are epic. They really add drama to the scene.

Too bad this thing isn't tapering to something closer to the width of the core. Think of how great this intersection would look with something more Flatiron than Fatiron.

@DZH nice photos. The last one is a new u/c conference center on the north side of stuart st, which will integrate the existing cafeteria in that building (a new caf will be on the ground floor of the fatiron building. The ped bridge will land just about the steel X - there are two semi-circular brackets at the top above the x where i imagine the 'suspension cable' will connect (they designed the ped bridge with a parabolic suspension cable to maximize its visual lightness). On the south side of stuart the bridge will land above a new entrance to the parking garage

DZ -- those are excellent pics

The building itself is starting to rise into visibility from many vantage points

Despite all the bad stuff people have had to say about it -- I think will make an interesting addition to the skyline in the Back Bay -- too bad it couldn't have poked-up another dozen stories on the end opposite the point and then cut the point-end back to a gradual step-up from the existing corner building
