Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

As far as international flights - looking back at old Massport's Route Development plan http://www.maroundtable.com/aroundTable/1206/RouteDevPlan_GovPatrick.pdf it's pretty amazing how successful they were.
The only target still unfulfilled is Delhi/Mumbai and from the list of largest Boston markets not having direct flight the top one is Athens (although this doc is from 2012 so things might've changed somewhat)

The Greek economy hasn't been doing great lately.

Very surprised an Indian carrier or even DL, havent picked up DEL or BOM yet. Huge market and from personal observation once... I took a 830 flight on AA and noticed many UA passengers connecting to EWR on Air India.. Im sure theres a very large demand to support a 3 or 4 weekly flight on a 787 to DEL.

Only time will tell, but pretty amazing how spot on Massport has been!

I believe the Indian carriers are suffering real financial issues. Didn't Jet Airways go bankrupt this spring? Also, I believe Air India is having debt servicing issues. This is probably impeding expansion.

Hard to compete with the Lufthansa Frankfort to Delhi connection -- it splits the long trip almost exactly in half and has a nice lounge to spend the intervening time

Instead of sitting cooped-up for more than 1/2 a day -- you pop overnight to FRA

Schnappen Sie sich ein Bier und eine Wurst, und dann you are ready for the next 7 hours of being cooped-up en route to Delhi

LH421
22:05 Boston - Logan International, MA (BOS) , Terminal E
11:15 + 1Tag Frankfurt/Main International (FRA) , Terminal 1
Airbus Industrie A330-300
Reisezeit: 07 h 10 min

Aufenthalt: Frankfurt/Main International (FRA), 02 h 25 min

LH760
13:40 + 1Tag Frankfurt/Main International (FRA) , Terminal 1
00:55 +2 Tage Delhi - Indira Gandhi International (DEL) , Terminal 3
Airbus Industrie A380-800
Reisezeit: 07 h 45 min

I highly recommend it

They're struggling pretty bad. Air India identified Boston as a target market for expansion a few years back, but they're in no position to expand right now. Jet Airways has suspended operations as far as I know.

I don't see DL doing BOS-BOM either. At least not for a while. I doubt they'd launch the route on an a350 which is large (harder to fill), and there are no plans to base that aircraft at Logan. I'm not sure that Terminal A can even accommodate one. It's possible that they could eventually launch it on the a330-900 which has the range and DL operates A330s out of BOS already, but they only started taking delivery of the a330 this spring and the first flight with one was last month (all are based at Seattle for the time being). So it'll be a while before they have the equipment to launch the route.

On page 7 they list San Jose (Costa Rica, I'm assuming) and Guatemala City as having 50k and 48k O&D pax per year. Why haven't these happened as JetBlue cities? It doesn't seem to be range Might they happen if JetBlue also launches a BOS-BCN & MAD (and gets some Spanish feed)

If you've never played with Karl Swartz's great circle mapper, you're welcome:

How can it be that BGR (Bangor, ME) has flights to ORD(3x), EWR(2x), LGA(3.5x), DCA(2x), & PHL(3.5x) but nothing on JetBlue to BOS or JFK?https://flybangor.com/passenger-information/flight-status/

I would think a JFK-BOS-BGR would do well: for feed purposes it might as well be a flight to Europe

(Edited to show frequency)

If there were ever a chance to balance a BOS hub on the Northeast quadrant, BGR would seem to be it.

I was actually surprised at the level of service Bangor has. I am not sure if this is only seasonal levels, but 3 flights to O'Hare for a secondary city in one of the smallest states is impressive.

I'm willing to bet it's a combination of factors.

  1. Drawing from well outside the small 150k metro area. It's a tiny city, but it's extremely remote by New England/NE United States standards. So the catchment area is pretty big. Basically much of Central, and all of Northern and Eastern Maine. When I was in college and flew out of the airport a few times, there were also a lot of people from New Brunswick flying out of Bangor as well.
  2. Tourism. It's the closest "major" airport to Bar Harbor, Acadia NP, and the Downeast ME coast. So it has major upticks in service for the summer season.

But even still, the airport serves under 500k passengers per year. Seems about right. Burlington, VT is similarly sized (a little larger) and serves about 700k. So they're likely using pretty small aircraft in order to get those frequencies. That's an issue for Jetblue which doesn't fly anything smaller than the 100 seat E-190 (the soon to be delivered A220 will have similar/slightly higher capacity). So filling it enough to generate revenue might be tricky. Maybe less so with the efficient 220. Delta Connection may consider a feeder using the E175 or a CRJ as they continue to build out the Boston hub.

What happened to JetBlue's partnership with CapeAir? I see Cape Air flies to Bar Harbor (BHB) (Acacia NP) but no longer as a code share?

Not really a flight 'addition' but American Airlines and United Airlines will both be decreasing Boston capacity by 5.4% while WN shrinks 11% in Boston for the upcoming year.

Although this 'shrink' offset by massive International expansions and growth from Delta, jetBlue andFrontier.

By checking some of the flights, a lot of AA Shuttle flights have downguaged and MIA/CLT lost a freq.

Some of this may be related to uncertainty over when 737 Max deliveries resume, and when it can begin flying again.

American ordered 100, with 24 delivered.
United ordered 137 with 14 delivered.

Has there ever been any talk to SQ having a BOS-SIN route??? Thats really a big name carrier/route that Boston could/should have...

Boston could potentially have Qantas routes to Sydney/Melbourne, Air India to BOM/DEL, and perhaps South African to J'burg.

Not many aircraft can make that route non stop. The NYC SIN route has to operate as business class only cause it can't take a full economy load.

And to Australia, I don't think there is any aircraft that can make that route commercially without a stop.

India is probably the most reasonable. That's doable. Would take a decent bite out of the middle eastern carriers connecting traffic though.

We're never going to see Qantas serving Boston. Plenty of convenient one-stop options on American via Dallas/Ft. Worth (a tiny local market to Australia, but given the large American hub here, it makes sense), Los Angeles and soon Chicago O'Hare which is getting non-stop flights to Brisbane in April 2020. Apart from New York (which is supposedly getting non-stop flights to Australia in 2021) I can't see Qantas doing one-stop service to any other US destination.

While Massport wants them, I cannot see Air India adding service to Boston. Plenty of convenient one-stop connections via Dubai on Emirates, or Doha on Qatar. Boston isn't New York or San Francisco in terms of market size and we also don't have a Star Alliance carrier in Boston to help feed the flights like Newark and San Francisco do. Qatar offers one-stop connections to 13 cities in India. Emirates offers one-stop connections to 10 cities in India.

Boston to Singapore would be the second longest non-stop flight in the world, just slightly shorter than Newark to Singapore which Singapore Airlines flies with a premium heavy configured A350. It would be nice, but it's another route I cannot see happen given the sheer distance and cost to operate such a flight.

I do agree with Ty that Air India is the most likely to happen.

It is official: this thread has a widebody-and-longer fetish to go with the height fetish in the skyline threads.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

But I do feel isolated when I revel in the joys of a new nonstop to Rochester, or a nicely redone residential-over-retail.

Nonstops to Rochester are good for the citizens, but do nothing for the prestige of the City. Since most of us won't take flights to either Rochester or Mumbai in our lives, we'll tend to trumpet the international flights more.
