Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

I was a little surprised when I read this, I would have thought the the more efficient A330 would have given this route a bit more leeway in the lean winter months but the other changes being made at the expense of Boston's three weekly flights, the added frequencies to Miami, Mexico City and Santiago seem perfectly logical. I'm sure much like Rome demand swings wildly between summer and winter whereas other similarly sized markets like Munich and Zurich are less seasonal(not to mention are more business-driven routes).

I have heard in the past that IAG/British Airways plans were to make Madrid a close #2 hub to Heathrow due to the facility's design. Maybe this economic crisis has put it on the backburner for now.

I had heard the same thing a few years ago. It's a beautiful facility and could certainly be better utilized as a medium-sized connecting hub for southern Europe focusing on Spain, France, Portugal and Italy but its location and the stature of Madrid itself limit its potential somewhat in that the it doesn't attract the volume of high value O&D of some of the other European hubs. I would also say that part of the problem is Iberia's long haul fleet. If they had some smaller planes, such as A330-200's or 787's they would have a much easier time sustaining thinner routes like Boston and maybe they'd be able to open up a few other markets like San Francisco and Toronto. The biggest issue with Iberia's future though is the state of Spain's economy. Until that's recovered, there's going to be very little certainty in Iberia's long-term viability as a semi-major carrier.

Massport finally released the passenger numbers through April and the numbers are flat YTD in total passengers. That has to be a pretty good sign considering 2012 was a record year for the airport. Flight movements for the year are down 4.8%.

8,918,794 total passengers through April.

It's going to be interesting to see the passenger numbers for the Tokyo flights once JAL gets back to their daily services so we can compare to last year.

The February 2013 numbers looked horrible when they started the non-daily service with the 777.

Where do these numbers come from? I poked around the Massport site earlier in the week but couldn't come up with anything.

I flew out of Logan last week and noticed the CONRAC has made some really good progress. Was not able to get any shots when I drove by it on my way to the terminal.

I was able to get some shots of the Terminal B connector:

The numbers for May are out and through the first 5 months of the year, 11,595,085 total passengers have flown through Logan which represents a .5% increase over 2012. International passengers stand at 1,662,776, which represents a 4.8% increase over 2012.

The numbers for the JAL flight in May are 7,165, which is up 17.1% over 2012's 6,121 passengers.

Total flight operations for the year are down 3.0% from 2012.

If total passengers are up, but flights overall are down, does that mean fuller but fewer planes? Bigger planes on average?

Thanks for the find. I really hope it happens and that he situation calms down by then. Istanbul is one of the world cities I would really like to see.

Had to pickup someone at Terminal C Wednesday night.

Traffic was horrendous where Terminal B meets C! They should have a police detail during peak times or some sort of traffic light where you exit from Terminal B arrivals.

Copa's Panama City flight starts next week and the signage for their presence at Terminal E has been updated.

Beeline, thanks again for your photos. In the last photo, is the Welcome to Boston a mesh screen (now apparently sometimes called tapestry screens) or painted on concrete?
