MA Casino Developments

Thank you, media, for asking those tough questions: "Will you run again?" and "What are your goals?"

I've been hit with harder balls of cotton candy.

If you live in Boston, consider signing this petition.

Just signed. Thanks for sharing Beton.
There's no need for an urban casino in Mass. We're not going to be Las Vegas . . . or even Atlantic City. If we want to win back tax money that's going to Foxwoods or Mohegan we should build a casino off an interstate highway well outside Boston. If we're just trying to pick up some more tax revenue without interest in who is paying, we should increase the number of liquor licenses, keno licenses, lotto games, liquor taxes, tobacco taxes, or whatever other regressive taxes we can come up with.

AMF-- No we are not trying to be Vegas -- Atlantic City is irrelevant to the discussion -- But there is a Vegas aspect with is relevant

Boston is a major destination for conventions -- an easily accessible casino can collect a good deal of business from convention visitors and also provide some attractiveness to certain types of organizations deciding on where to go for a convention

The kind of urban casino which is appropriate is similar to what you find in Singapore, Berlin, Montreal, etc. A major facility either in the midst or on the outskirts of downtown -- easily reachable by taxi from any hotel

That's why with the demise of Foxboro it will be Suffolk

Maybe........The majority that lives near the area with the small businesses will be against this at all costs. Anybody with a half a brain wil understand that a billion dollar casino will suck up every ounce of working class dollars in the area and spit out a bunch of poor drunk demoralized souls. That area will go to SHIT.

My theory is based on Back to the Future II.
The Casino will look exactly like Biffs Casinos, which the problem is outside the casino around Lynn, Revere, Eastie will look like the Element in the movie.

Just like when they built a similar casino where exactly?

You're comparison is Atlantic City? Good news then, Boston is absolutely nothing like Atlantic City. You're talking about what happened when a small satellite city centered it's entire industry around one thing, tying it twice over to things that aren't sustainable.

The casino is actually a nicer part of Detroit. Ofcourse not being burnt down, abbandonded, or replaced with a field of tall grass isn't too hard to compete with.

Again a city that put all its eggs in one basket? Plus, anyone with half a brain knows it isn't the casino that killed Detroit's downtown...

Underground, pick out the nice one below.
Note, this could be a trick question.

Metropolitan Areas with Urban Gaming
(Greater than 500K people, casino is within 20 miles of geographic center of metropolitan area)

Albuquerque, New Mexico 4 Indian Casinos
Chicago, Illinois 4 Riverboats
Detroit, Michigan 3 Landbased
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 3 Indian Casinos
Kansas City, Missouri 4 Riverboats
Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1 Indian Casino
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota 1 Indian Casino
Oakland/San Francisco, California 1 Indian Casino
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 2 Indian Casinos
Phoenix, Arizona 4 Indian Casinos
Sacramento, California 1 Indian Casino
San Bernardino/Riverside, California 1 Indian Casino
San Diego, California 1 Indian Casino
St. Louis, Missouri 5 Riverboats
Tampa, Florida 1 Indian Casino
Tucson, Arizona 3 Indian Casinos

Yeah....That industry is such a positive influence on Detriots society that it is growing and flourishing the community with other businesses like HardcorePawn which has become a TV SHOW.

The citizens of Detriot pawn their possessions to take a shot at the Downtown Detriot Casino.

Thats Great Innovation from the Casino industry. The domino affect.
Drugs, Rape, Abandoned houses, single mothers........Seriously, Nothing better than Casinos for that area.

Suffolk Downs Casino will be terrible for Eastie and Revere, even if it isn't a disaster for Boston overall. If this were conceived for the Seaport as a high-end waterfront casino with high-end entertainment and restaurants targeting tourists and conventioneers, I would see this as far more positive overall for the city's vitality. Sticking this out there at shabby Suffolk Downs is just asking for trouble.

@ AFL: Ha ha! Good call.

Oh, God. That list... are you saying a casino could turn us into a hell hole like San Fran or Minneapolis? The Horror!

Agreed......Seaport would be a better option than Suffolk Downs.

To those who have signed the petition, many thanks.

For those who advocate rolling this Trojan Horse onto the track at Suffolk Downs, can you help me understand (with facts and longitudinal data) why a Casino would benefit the abutting communities.

There's no need for an urban casino in Mass.

They say you can't fight City Hall...

We're gonna beat City Hall, and the State House with a fucking car antenna. Believe it!

I wasn't commenting on the cities. I was commenting on the casinos.

Sorry, I'm not following. What about the casinos? Seems to me A) they exist and B) those places haven't fallen apart because of them, so what's the big deal?

@Beton Brut, I can't speak for everyone, but personally I'd say it's because I haven't seen an anti-casino argument yet that didn't come of as either a) garden variety NIMBY-sim or b) Cary Nation Neo-Prohibitionism.

Suffolk Downs unveils casino renderings
By Herald staff
Tuesday, June 5, 2012 - Updated 15 seconds ago

Suffolk Downs unveiled renderings this morning for a bright, modern, light-filled resort casino at the site of the venerable racetrack.

The renderings show an eight-story, arc-shaped glass-clad building in a park-like setting with a skylit, tree-filled lobby, a trellis-draped walkway and outdoor tables. The unassuming white building’s only obvious nod to Vegas glitz is the bold Caesar’s logo over the entryway.

The proposed casino — the subject of industry hopes and neighborhood controversy — will be detailed this morning at a press conference by Suffolk officials and honchos from gaming giant Caesars Entertainment.

DEVELOPING ...

This architectural rendering shows the entrance of the casino building being proposed by Caesars Entertainment.
