Wynn unveils Everett resort casino plans

Flashy Las Vegas billionaire Steve Wynn blew back into town today to unveil stunning plans for a $1 billion casino he hopes to build on the shores of the Mystic River in Everett, upping the ante in the intensifying battle for the sole Boston gaming license.

A rendering of the project shows a glass-fronted double tower surrounded by a concourse of low buildings overlooking a lagoon.

Wynn is battling Suffolk Downs in East Boston, which is partnered with Vegas giant Caesar’s, and Crossroads Resort in Milford, which is working with Warner Gaming, for the sole casino license for the Boston region. The flamboyant gaming mogul owns some of the world’s largest and most lucrative casinos and has pledged to build a world-class resort on the 40-acre Everett site, which formerly housed a contaminated chemical plant.

Critics have said the site cleanup will be too costly and time-consuming and have also raised concerns about access to the property, which is located off Route 99. But Wynn has dismissed those concerns and vowed to build a world-class resort.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, who supports Suffolk Downs, has hinted that he could throw up a roadblock to the Everett project, noting that the road into the site is owned by the city of Boston. Boston would likely be considered a “neighboring community” to the Everett site, which would require Wynn to strike a deal with the city before a casino license could be approved. There have been no formal talks between Everett and Boston, officials said.

The state gaming board is currently sifting through thousands of pages of financial and personal documents, while cops and forensic investigators are poring over the backgrounds of hundreds of people tied to the state’s 11 gambling proposals. In addition to the Boston license, one casino license will be issued for western Massachusetts, while there will be one slots parlor licensed.

In Southeastern Massachusetts, the Mashpee Wampanoags have an exclusive right to develop a casino in Taunton, but their window of opportunity is closing as the state gaming commission is considering opening the region up to commercial bidders due to repeated delays. The tribe has struck a new deal with Gov. Deval Patrick that needs to be approved by the state Legislature, as well as the federal government.

The slots license is slated to be issued this fall while the first casino licenses will be doled out early next year.

Possibly one of the worst ideas I have ever heard of for this location. A Traffic nightmare.

Design by Willard Whyte

I get the James Bond reference (Diamonds are Forever is one of my favs), but I'm confused why you're associating him with the design. This doesn't really look like the Whyte House.

Maybe Wynn could pick up the tab for improvements at Sullivan Square. I believe there was mention of an overhaul to Sullivan related to the Rutherford Ave downgrade, right?

You're right. But the render has a cheesy late 60's Vegas vibe, if you dig that sort of thing. (I guess Jill St. John made everything look better.)

I was at the press conference, where they had a 10 foot wide rendering hanging from the ceiling which looked good.

The biggest architectural detail lost by the digital images I just saw on the Herald and Globe (and here) is that the trademark Wynn metallic-bronze glass looks flat and brown.

Google the Wynn Las Vegas for an idea of the glass color. No other renderings were released and the presenter said Steve Wynn himself would come to town to unveil all the details of the rooms, parks, etc with more images.

I don't care about the boxy hotel, I want to see more of the waterfront park.

I just don't get why they selected this site. I am in that area a lot and there are so many drawbacks. The pollution is one. Access is terrible. The neighbors are: the power plant, the MWRA pump station, big box stores atop a capped contaminated site (more of the Monsanto property), a bus facility, Schnitzer steel, a petroleum terminal, and a LNG terminal. None of these will be redeveloped anytime in our lifetimes so the neighborhood will not change. Does that hotel have windows on the back? Those must be the cheap rooms.

I want to see more of the waterfront park and shopping mall. I'm meh on the hotel tower, but that waterfront area has the potential to be Liberty Wharf on steroids.

The Everett Mayor said at the event today that the waterfront park would connect to the parks along Gateway Center, giving Everett a fairly substantial network of waterfront boardwalk and parks.

He also mentioned that you could always "park for free at the Target parking lot" which I'm sure nobody over at Target wanted to hear!!!!

Guess I didn't really look beyond the tower. Maybe the waterfront part will be interesting.

No doubt the august commodores at the Winter Hill Yacht Club are furiously drawing up plans to demolish the dam and the orange line bridge so as to accommodate all the Saudi and Russian tycoons who can be anticipated to park their yachts alongside this glamorous new Rivieria. Monte Carlo on the Mystic, here we come.....

With the Wynn Proposal for Everett....Suffolk Downs proposal never looked better.

I'm against both casinos which I believe the infrastructure is completely outdated to support a billion dollar casino in both areas.

For that being said. Suffolk Downs would be a better choice than Everett.

On another note, the villain in Diamonds are Forever was Mr. Wynn.

I'm against the casinos on a more fundamental level. Any bleeding hearts out there in support of either of these? These are just a tax on the poorest of the poor, like alcohol, cigarettes and scratch tickets.

I'd rather see the maze of MBTA facilities surrounding and including the Charlestown Garage be moved here, and combined with the Everett bus facility. Then put the casino and development on the Charlestown side. Sounds like a win-win to me. Or... Wynn-Wynn?

WeWinWithWynn

The chances for Suffolk Downs just got infinitesslemssley smaller.

Hooray!
