Replacing the painted finish line with a giant bronze cast plaque would be cool but the bronze would probably wear down too quickly and become illegible and slippery during the rain.

Granite might be good. Unless it is cheap like the crap they use to outline the former Haymarket Square. It's chipping and utility work has destroyed it in spots. But a permanent finish line would be solid!
The problem with any kind of inlaid granite is that eventually the finished grade of the granite will deviate from the finished grade of the asphalt. Then the granite will get the shit kicked out of it by plows.
Same thing happens when the treat the borders of cross walks with flush granite curbing.
