Marriott Moxy Hotel | 240 Tremont Street (Parcel P-7A) | Theater District

Re: Theater District

^ If you want the Bostonian experience according to hipsters and transients that would be your source.

As far as actual news goes that is another thing. I know of no candidate currently in the spotlight that Menino wouldn't wipe the floor with.

That's not the point. The point is that Mayor Menino might not run for re-election. Thus, a race. A race between people not named Menino.

Theatre District Excitement!

Re: Theater District

So is it safe to say that what was proposed for this site, a thin, 14 story mid-rise, is not going to happen? Anyone know what the status is?

Re: Theater District

Boston desperately needs to elect someone that lives in "boston". Readville is basically a suburb. A city with such a residential core need someone that understands and enjoys the urban condition.

Re: Theater District

Here's an idea, lets have Disney come in and redefine the Theatre District for the 21st Century! It worked for New York (whether that is a good thing or not is subject to debate).

This post is only 50% sarcastic.

Re: Columbus Center Drama Center

While I'd love to see more theatres built, perhaps we should concentrate first on filling the ones we have (Wang, Shubert, Wilbur).

Re: Theater District

Very true Ron. But how do you do that? You need to develop the area to entice an audience, and the audience who generally goes to the theaters are middle-aged to older couples. So I'm guessing some upscale restaurants in the area, combined with a little cleanup would give a little more life to the existing theaters.

The reason you're ambivalent is you know that New York's theatre district was alive and lively when they called in Disney to re-imagine it a different --and perhaps arguably-- better way.

Boston's district also had its bustling sleaze, but it's long gone --and it hasn't been replaced by anything magnetic to rouse it from its coma.

Arguably: in a theatre district, low-life is better than no life.

Re: Theater District Parcel P-7A

What a tacky gimick, although the building itself is, I think, quite nice.

The second rendering omits the W for some reason (old?)
EDIT: it omits the W because it's from 2007. Why do we retain developers who do not build?

Re: Theater District Parcel P-7A

I like the concept, but why hasn't it been built yet?

If I owned or operated the Wilbur Theatre, I might be concerned that this would block view of my marquee from Tremont Street north of Stuart.

Re: Theater District Parcel P-7A

I think it doesn't block the Wilbur marquee. I hope that it means they have a year to do something or lose the designation.

Re: Theater District Parcel P-7A

I have always really liked this proposal.... hope it gets built.

That is diagonal from the MBTA headquarters. I've always felt that area (corner of Tremont and Stuart Streets) was still kinda rough after nightfall.

The sleazy night clubs/porn shops don't give a good image for the area plus many homeless hang out around there and are aggressive with asking for money. There are some restaurants around there but I recall a couple times the T building was actually placed under lock-down orders after several incidents happened outside in the middle of the day. I also read recently that the W Residences across Tremont street (which was being built forever) hasn't lived up to expectations either?

That area needs to be brought back to the drawing board. I haven't been recently but it used to die-down after dark very quickly.

Re: Theater District Parcel P-7A

They should send some nuns out to slap everyone on the wrists with rulers.

Isn't there only one pretty tame looking porn shop left?

Re: Theater District Parcel P-7A

The night-time activity of that area depends entirely on what is playing at the Wilbur, Majestic, Shubert, and Wang theatres on any particular evening.
