This is a really nice station, it came out great. The people of pawtucket are really lucky to have it. They have some great connectivity now with Commuter rail to Boston, Providence and TF green, and Amtrak to NYC.

It seems like it is, but can anyone confirm if this was built with 4-tracking of the NEC in mind? I.e. placing additional tracks on the outside of the new platforms.

It looks like this awning has the least amount of usable space possible for this footprint. In the bottom pic it appears to not even stick out over the entrance at all. Whats the point of this if all it does it covers the dead space between the entrance and elevator? Is it only here as protection from falling ice off the building and not to give cover from the elements at the headhouse?

Its purpose is to look cool and hold the lighting system. It's basically public art.

Seems like just a single freight track on the side that could maybe be electrified in the future if need be. Maybe theres enough room on the right for a fourth track too with not too much adjustment idk.

They're also testing the elevator today.

^And the elevator is currently running in automated up / down continuous mode (as we saw with GLX stations). It is looking like this new head house is going to open soon.

Has the MBTA released final plans for the fate of the head house on the Alewife/Outbound side? With the completion of the Google building it’s kind of oddly offset on its own

Yes, that’s a freight track on the left (P&W to Worcester, and could be commuter service one day)

I believe that the NEC only needs to be 3 track here (and PVD - BOS in general) and I believe that’s just one empty track slot on the right.

To my eye, the render appears to show a space intentionally left open on the right for a future additional track. Even the pedestrian overpass looks like it could span an extra track.

The P&W "FRIP" track is problematic for passenger service. It can't be electrified because it's already been undercut to the max for taking autorack traffic. It's a high-and-wide route, so to top off the island for that track they'd have to install a gauntlet. It's currently unsignalized and under control of the P&W dispatcher as part of their mainline, so isn't even under Amtrak traffic control (the tie-in to the mainline NEC isn't until Atwells Interlocking south of Providence Station, so it parallels for a long distance without interacting). All told it would take a lot of expensive work to make that track passenger-bearing.

Traffic levels aren't too bad right now since everything's pretty much traveling at the same speed to the state line...70 MPH max with a bunch of 60 MPH curves. There's not a lot of train-on-train interference at that order of procession. The lack of provisioning for tri-track at South Attleboro is more problematic because that's 125 MPH territory from the state line to East Junction, so the Amtraks are really pulling away from the commuter traffic at that point and need their passing opportunities.

Wasn’t there a recently failed proposal from a private operator for passenger traffic on the P&W? Did they have a plan to deal with these issues or was it just ignored. I know the proposal was shady at best, but I can’t imagine any investor believing they could fund the installation of signals on their own.

@F-Line to Dudley, Is there any chance of South Attleboro getting rebuilt with a 3rd track? (Seems like they're so messed up on timetable and budget that they maybe haven't settled this question yet?)

@Badusername there was a more-legit study for PVD-Woonsocket-Worcester/Boston CR done in 2007. It found the main demand nodes for Woonsocket were Providence and Worcester (not an extension/leg/connection to Boston)

What headhouse needs to be rebuilt next?

Personally, I do think some of the blue line stations need to be enclosed better. Those are very old anyway. Back Bay may be a bit worn down and ready for some rehab.

This might be more than a headhouse rebuild, but Quincy Center still needs it badly. The area has seen a ton of increased density in the last decade but the station entrance facing the busway is truly terrible -- it's a decapitated parking garage with an empty storefront -- and the busway is worse than it was before the construction.

Back Bay's rehab is contingent on the Boston Properties development there, the Back Bay/South End Gateway Project. It is tied to the project approval.
