Only 6 more days left before the redo on the Orange Line is finished! Some, or most of the old rusted out dirty embarrassing trains will be taken out of service. Mostly the new trains will run. Comprising of 60 new cars, they will take over & reign supreme. Two of the slow zones will remain for a short while until the new tracks installed have settled in, then they will be taken away, giving the new trains their much-needed speed to catch up & run smoothly. :)

any idea what a short while is? days or months?

I'd say in about a couple of days. :)

According to the link posted above, they state 1 week:
Orange Line riders should note that, when Orange Line trains begin running again on Monday, September 19, slow zones will continue to be in place temporarily for about one week where the work was performed. In the rail industry, after new track and ballast installation, and due to the amount of track area disturbed during work, it is a given that slow zones need to temporarily remain in place. This is because it takes time for the new track and ballast to “settle” as trains repeatedly run over these areas.

Anyone know if that is still to the 20 something mph increase or are we actually getting what it should be rated at?

We should be getting what it's rated at, eventually. The Blue Line trains once went so slow through the tunnel! It eventually sped up back to it's normal speed. The tracks were reset, & this slow speed was necessary to keep the tracks from coming apart, causing a derailment. You wouldn't want that!!

Get ready, guys! The MBTA is seriously contemplating shutting down other lines for a possible redo, just like it is doing with the Orange Line now. But maybe on a slightly smaller scale. I'd say that it is hoping to please the FTA (Federal Transit Administration) by avoiding a take-over of the system by making things right such as the safety issues, mismanagement, short-staffings, crashes, derailments & other things. Heard it on the news.

5 week shutdown of the D branch for track replacement starting the 24th. Am l misremembering or is this the third long shutdown of the D in as many years?

Edit:
A one week closure June 2021 and 2 months of weekend/ evening closures Winter 2020.

They also had a substantial project with weekend busing during the summer of 2019, as well. It seems like the work to do on the D is endless.

MBTA Completes Green Line D Branch Track and Signal Replacement Project, Bringing Safer, More Reliable Service to D Branch Riders
Posted on December 10, 2021
Today the MBTA announced the completion of the Green Line D Branch Track and Signal Replacement Project, enhancing safety, reliability, and resilience. This project began in June 2018 as part of Green Line Transformation program with the goal of improving track conditions and signal efficiency while also reducing the overall risk of maintenance delays and need for repairs.

(Emphasis mine)

I'm not sure it is quite a 5 week total shutdown; the service alert on that page is worded this way:
Shuttle UPCOMING
Shuttle buses replace D Branch service between Riverside and Kenmore from Sat, Sep 24, through Sun, Oct 2, for track and infrastructure upgrades. Additional work is scheduled for Oct 8 - 16 and Oct 22 - 30.
It sounds to me like three separate 9-day shutdowns? not sure if that's much better

Seems like it's been a gazillion times that the D Line was so supposedly done over! It's been shut down on weekends time, after time, after time, & things are still not done there!! I'm waiting anxiously to hear if the Red Line will be shut down at all. or at least part of it.That line will also probably get a redo because more of the new railcars are coming. And just like the Orange Line, things have gone haywire there as well!!
