Looks like they are perhaps adding another crane base right now as they are lowering a large crane piece into the pit. Or maybe they are just stashing pieces to make the current one taller eventually. Hard to tell from my vantage point.

If so, they'd better unstash it by Saturday morning. or it'll stay there in 6 ft of concrete forever...

I saw early this morning they were setting up a huge white crane on Washington Street.

Some interesting notes about the rebar/mat slab -

The VP of the firm I work for is a structural engineer and was shooting the breeze with us about this project the other day, as our office is literally next door:

Rebar is measured in terms of eighths and the rebar # corresponds to #/8". (ex. #5 rebar will be 5/8" diameter - this is also the most common type of rebar). He mentioned that it appears they are using somewhere around the range of #12 rebar (12/8" = 1-1/2") for this mat slab which is simply insane in terms of sheer weight of the metal. A #12 weighs about 6.5 lbs/ft and the segments are ~40' long meaning that each segment weighs around 260 lbs and requires each piece to essentially be a team job lifting and placing.

He also added that the mat slab for the building doesn't have to be 6' thick structurally to support the building above and is instead that thick to simply weigh the building down and keep it in the ground. If it wasn't 6' thick, the building could quite literally pop out of the ground. This is a very common failure of concrete underground storage tanks. They'll just pop up out of the ground. The same can apply to this foundation.

Lots of buildings around here have this type of mat footings. Many from around the 60's and 70's.

FYI..another retailer is on board for the Burnham building. Never heard of this company before, but apparently they are based in Dublin.

The downtown BID Website confirms that they have signed on for the Burnham building.

According to an article in the BBJ...they will be leasing 112,000 over four floors in the Burnham. 70,000 will be retail and the rest will be corporate support for their new US initiative. At this point, I believe most if not all of the Burnham is leased out when you include Arnold International and Roche Bros.

in Bee Line's second and third photos above, in between the bracing on the left side of the pit, there appears to be another red crane base. This is what I saw them lowering into the pit a week or two ago. Is it possible they will pour the slab around the second crane base?

Roche will be huge for the area but I am a little disappointed that a clothing store is taking nearly all of the rest of the Burnham retail. Maybe it was wishful thinking, but I was hoping for a nice mix of retailers and not just a market and a 4 story clothing only store. And the tower portion only has 90,000 square feet of retail, correct? If one retailer takes the bulk of that space we could be looking at a market (again, MUCH needed), a 4 story clothing store and one or two other retailers. Not sure why, but I find that somewhat disappointing as I was hoping for several stores, several restaurants and at least one entertainment space of some kind.... But it's early so who knows....

This should be fine. If anything, this might generate enough demand to perhaps have a market open in the old Barnes&Noble store.

If Primark and Uniqlo both open here, I would be overjoy. This area would definitely be bustling.

Uniqlo will be in FHM.

Also, given the square footages, I'd expect a 2.5-story retail portion and 1.5 floors of office for their US HQ.

(112,000 sf)/(4 fl) = 28,000 sf/fl
Retail is (70,000 sf)/(28,000 sf/fl) = 2.5 fl

Incredible. Downtown is looking better than it has in many years. Starting with the influx of good dining and drinking around DTX, and now with all the new residential coming online, the growth of a real "innovation district" in the older downtown office buildings, and now the revitalization of this retail mix in the Burnham... my bet is that we'll be seeing a number of new residential conversions along the Washington Street corridor and even deeper into the Financial District.

They all really seem to love both Primark and capitalism.
