Northeastern eyes dorms

I did not realize how big this building was going to be. Even though it is not finished, it looks great driving down Columbus Ave/Tremont St, just from the shear presence of the building.

Could this type of development spur high-rises further down Columbus Ave towards Roxbury Crossing and Jackson Sq?

I wonder how NU will handle the clash between Boston residents and NU students when they have to travel through Ruggles St. to get to class. When I went there, out-of-towners were always nervous about traveling through Ruggles Station (and they had a reason).

Tell more about this; I'm curious.

I'm just expressing the stereotypical viewpoint. I don't agree with it. I went to WIT for two years and traveled through Ruggles countless times. I don't think it is bad there at all, but that is the stereotype.

I had friends that lived across the street from ruggles and they never had any problems. But I also had a friend get robbed at gunpoint on columbus. You just gotta be smart around that area, and college kids from out of town ( white or not) don't understand that.

There is no reason to be any more scared in Ruggles station than there is in Kendall or Harvard or Davis. The station already straddles the Northeastern campus, even without these latest additions.

yes, you have to be smart around ruggles station to avoid possibly getting mugged at gunpoint.

that means its a really crappy area. thats the stereotype for a reason

I was in Ruggles when there was a shooting over the summer. I catch a train there twice a day, and live right next door. Having said that, the "violence" in the area is tamed (the BP headquarters is right across the street) and usually not random. It's often gang-related and not completely threatening to passers-by.

Such divergent viewpoints can't all be equally true.

I suppose the truly curious could look up the number of reported crimes at the station over a given period of time and then look at the ridership numbers for that station for the same period and figure out a crime rate that way.
Me, I don't really care enough to go through the trouble, but I'm willing to bet the odds of being involved in or even witness to a crime are quite low.

I guess my glass will be half full until I or someone I know is shot. Just because me and my skin color become a minority when entering that building doesn't mean it's a bad place. The only thing that might scare me is the resentment the Roxbury residents might have at the approval of that dorm tower, which might manifest itself in some sort of violence. I'm more worried about some ignorant white country freshmen going across Ruggles saying something stupid than a race/socioeconomic based "random" act of violence aimed at a Northeastern student living in the new dorms.

When I attended NU (and prior to that) I knew of students (mostly not from the city) that did not like using Ruggles. If they had to cross the other side they would rather cross at the Columbus Lot Parking Garage or Lot (no matter what). If they had to go downtown they would rather use the green line than the orange.

If you have been to NU during the day when classes are letting out or beginning to start; there are people everywhere (very crowded) now imagine that same crowd in Ruggles (especially when the high-school and middle school lets out). I see a potential for an increase in crimes against NU students.

I think the violence and robberies at Ruggles has decreased since I have attended college their (and that is just my opinion), but it still has that reputation.

wow I'd ask for a refund from NU if I were you.

^ I think he was poking fun at your use of "their" instead of "there".

As for Ruggles, i only rarely use it, and have never once had a problem. That is not to say there isn't any, but in my experience it has been safe.

And for the record, when I say I use it twice a day -- it is 6 days a week, and I get back between 10 and 11 pm.

I didn't mean to alarm anyone, my friend who got robbed at gunpoint on columbus ave, yea it was at 3:45 in the morning, with his girlfriend trying to get into his jeep wrangler. The kid had a bullseye on his back. One thing I love about Boston is that, as a college student, or someone young out to have a good time, your never going to have any problems. Fanueil Hall, the downtown bars, Boylston St., Newbury St., near Fenway, near the Garden, these kids can walk around with their wallets in their hands and nobody will bother them. Ruggles, is a little different. It's the typical city area. There's bad, there's good. It's really as simple as that. You just have to be smart, and if you're not smart you MIGHT find some trouble.

wow I'd ask for a refund from Suffolk if I were you. :p

But yes, it's very true. I didn't mean to overreact before. Ruggles is not a terrible area and if you're smart and minding your own business you won't get into any kind of trouble 99.5% of the time. But if you wanna talk stats, a good amount of violent crimes do occur at/around Ruggles (usually in the wee hours of the morning or gang-related)
