Re: Novartis Expansion

Looks like Herzog & de Meuron, circa 2003. I don't object, but I need some context...

Agree 100%...it could be pretty cool, but it's necessary to see the whole picture.

Re: Novartis Expansion

The giant fence is back up. This time it appears it's opaque, so you can't see through it.

Re: Novartis Expansion

Utility work has been going on along Osborn Street and now State Street. It looks like interior demolition is underway on the Analog Devices building.

Re: Novartis Expansion

So has a final, or even preliminary, design been publicly released? This project seems strangely secretive, especially for such a late stage as this.

Re: Novartis Expansion

nice! good to see!

Boston -- that makes me sad in a way -- the building was historic -- probably responsible for saving more lives than Novartis will acheive

That was the building where Analog Devices made a few hundred milllion MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) on silicon wafers

Many of those MEMS were the microaccelerometers which launch air bags in the few miliseconds between when the exterior of your car strkes an object and when your body would be striking the now stopped car interior -- thereby converting a potentia fatal accident into bumps and bruises

Re: Novartis Expansion

Not sad to see this building go -- it was more fit for Waltham than Cambridge.

Cool tidbit about it's history, though.

A third of the way into the building.

Analog Devices has relocated the MEMS work to their much larger complex in Wilmingron (not exactly Waltham -- but close)

Re: Novartis Expansion

wow. that what i guess was a rubber roof is so haunting looking. Horror movie much?

Found$ -- that building was very expensive per square foot

The inside included a large clean room and a smaller very very clean room -- there was a lot of very sophisticated air handling, water handling and chemical handling stainless steel ducts and pipes

I presume that those things have been removed well before the exterior demo started

However -- the foundation should be interesting as well -- there were special sections that were isolated from the bulk of the building to control vibration

Re: Novartis Expansion

^ oh i was not commenting that i thought the building was cheep or a mess or anything, i was just pointing out how weird/creepy/eerie the picture looked. Like something out of a apocalyptic movie.

Found$ -- I was just sort of lamenting the loss of the functionality -- that building as an integrated system was one of the best in the area

I would put it only behind the aforementioned Analog Devices in Wilmington and the penultimate arround here the Intel Fab 17 in Hudson

fom the Intel website: ABOUT INTEL MASSACHUSETTS

"Intel has had a major manufacturing and research and development presence in Hudson, Massachusetts since 1998. The 149-acre site has 1.3 million square feet of building space, including the USD 2 billion Fab 17 semiconductor manufacturing plant.

Half of Hudson's 1,900 Intel employees work in manufacturing and the majority of the other employees are product developers and software designers. The technology created in Hudson powers high-performance servers, multi-user computers, notebook computers, and mobile products around the world"

Still no renderings?

Re: Novartis Expansion

Cambridge is holding a public meeting this evening regarding the proposal. I wonder if Novartis will show the renderings...

PB#265, 181 Massachusetts Avenue and 22 Windsor Street. Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Inc. requests a Project Review Special Permit (Section 19.20) for 572,663 square feet of technical office and research/development with accessory retail in Special District 15. The applicant also requests additional height (Section 17.604.2) and reduction in parking as allowed by Section 17.606 for 458 parking spaces.

Several renderings (November 7) in here:

Re: Novartis Expansion

Wait...they want more height and less parking? Am I reading that correctly?

Overall it looks pretty cool. I'm waiting to see some bigger pics before I pass judgement though.
