I love this building, it's our own little slice of Florence here in Boston. Does anybody know more about its history?

I believe that building was originally built as a firehouse, and that they would hang the wet fire hoses from the balcony to dry.
 
Yes it was a firehouse. The dining areas inside still have the very high ceilings and arches for the trucks. Dont know about the hoses. I imagine the tower was for lookout purposes, similar to the firehouse in Brookline Village.
