Post Cards of Boston 1900's-1990

Why was the Madison torn down? It came down only in 1983, well past the gory days of urban renewal.

I assume it was to make way for the O'Neill building

Well, yeah, but why was it considered a good idea to tear it down to build a suburban office building?
 
...because it was the '80s. And that building probably had really crappy systems.

Not trying to be snarky. But that's kind of how things went until about 15 years ago, you know?
 
Would have been cool to keep the Madison's exterior facade wall, and build their crappy office building behind it.
