I think the wall of death is the square blocks that front the parking garage at street level. They have yet to make their appearance, other than the mockup.

Was this the fastest 30 stories ever, or did Avalon Exeter and Berkeley just really screw with my expectations?

I think it's only 26 stories. Maybe since you were expecting 30, it didn't go any faster yet finished in 87% of the time you were hoping for.
