Rose Kennedy Greenway

It hasn't even opened yet and already I want this carousel to be operating year round. Add some heaters, have some trucks/carts selling hot drinks and snacks, and leave it up through the winter. I feel like it could keep the Greenway busy constantly.

The carousel will be open on weekends through December 31. It will be remain up throughout the winter:

The top will be angled to shed snow in the winter and made of a flexible polypropylene fabric that allows light to shine through. When the carousel is closed for the winter — probably beginning on New Year’s Day each year and lasting until April school vacation week — it will be enclosed by clear glass panels. “It’ll be like a lantern at nighttime in the winter,” [Linda] Jonash [the Conservancy's director of planning and design] said.

I am extremely confused by what you mean. If they are not physically present, by definition they are somewhere else doing something else.

Also, I'd argue that a unique attraction like this carousel is far more likely to get people to bundle up and head into the cold than shopping at a store they could do online instead.

They are at home in their own states and countries. By not physically present I mean they are not present in Boston. Faneuil Hall is a tourist destination from Apr to Sep only. There are absolutely no tourists during the winter (besides the occasional school bus of kids from Montreal). Having the carousel on would be a waste of electricity.

Anyway the article in the post above this proves my point. Jan-Apr it should be shut.

Would there be enough space in the park to make a temporary winter market akin to those in Scandinavia and Germany? I could see running it through those times, especially leading up to christmas and new years.

I'm sorry but this carousel looks like it will give kids nightmares.

It's the sort of thing crunchy-goofy and as-out-of-touch-as-the-Mir-space-station adults would foist on kids. You know the type of adults most inclined toward this: trust fund types who fritter away the money their last working descendant made in the 1920s on maintaining their independent, non-profit publishing business that focuses on mid 20th-century Costa Rican magic realism, while they drive a battered old Volvo with a faded "Kerry-Edwards 2004" sticker on the bumper. Just look to Arlington for a lot of these people.

Sorry, I'm underslept and my imagination is on overdrive. But. Yeah. Creepy-arse carousel this one is, huh?

Unless your name is Howie Carr, you're stealing somebody else's schtick.

Would be nice to see it up for a "holliday" festival type deal on the greenway. Could have a bunch of trees and meet santa type deals, maybe a rink or two if they have space for it somewhere.

The German Christmas festivals are really nice. But I get shivers thinking about being out there in the cold weather.
Gov't Center Plaza is a better spot for it as it might be less windswept. But depending on the day, even that can be bitter!

Nope. Kids will love it.

^ Yup. Maybe a couple kids' imaginations will run too wild, but the vast majority of people out there will love, or at the very least appreciate, the whimsy.

Now, exactly a week ago I did a walk from North Station down to the Chinatown gate, covering the whole shebang as Lexicon and other other-of-towners requested. I haven't quite gotten around to editing all of them (I took a lot and life's busy) but I think I got about half done and figured I'll share these for now. Anyways.

I don't think you took enough pictures!

That curving fence with the temporary photography exhibit hides the highway exits. It's a disgrace just feet away from Quincy Market. I say they should try to get something built not even over the ramps but just on that silly little parcel. Even if it's just a one story restaurant. Just something to enclose the street at this point.

IAM thinkin sHood be PINBALL MUSEE und ARKADin. Mit der hIStoire of PINSBALL machina. OLDE WILLIAMS machines, oLDE ZOLTAN, BIG BIG tOMMY EDsisohn LITE BULPS, olds SKITBALLS

Enjoyed the pix, KZ.

I see that carousel on the greenway and four words come to mind:

Ferris
Wheel
Roller
Coaster

Could we get a roller coaster with two stations, one at the south end and one at the north? Just convert one car in the coaster to carry baggage, and it looks like the north station-south station connection has been solved. Then have a ferris wheel at each end which transfers people between the coaster, ground, and subways.

Oh and maybe add another stop in there near the center and build an arcade, would be sweet to have TOD skeeball

I like the way you think.

On that note, does the immediate Boston area have any sort of arcade? I don't recall ever seeing one, but I have yet to venture everywhere in the city.

Laser Quest in West Roxbury and Dave & Buster's in Braintree. I'm pretty sure there are some farther out like North Shore and Framingham and whatnot.
