Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

The weather is irrelevant. Silicon Valley is mostly a sprawling wasteland. You need a car to get around there (with the exception of some limited areas around commuter rail stops, some bus lines, and some corporate shuttles, none of which are very convenient), making accessibility very difficult compared to any place that allows multi-modal transportation (underground BRT, walking, car, etc.)

Is it more pleasant to walk around the SF peninsula in February? Yeah. Do you really have the option of doing so to get to work? Not really.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

San Franciso is a much warmer climate which makes accessibilty much easier place.

Boston from Dec to March can make life very miserable.

Yeah, makes it much more pleasant for all those people that walk the 40 miles from Russian Hill to Palo Alto for work.

For the record, there is also LRT in Silicon Valley consisting of 2 main lines, one of which hits a bunch of the big office parks in Mountain View and Santa Clara with connections to Caltrain at Mountain View as well as downtown San Jose.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

Another company possibly looking to move.

Spokeswoman Lisa Buffington said Ironwood was evaluating its future space needs before the FDA’s approval of linaclotide, but she declined to confirm reports that the company is considering moving to Boston’s Seaport District — which is the plan for its Cambridge neighbor, Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

....

The Herald reported in May that Ironwood is in the running for a planned biotech lab building in the Seaport Square project on the South Boston waterfront.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

I am sticking this Globe article here because it discusses why entrrepreneurs choose to start businesses in Boston. And a lot of those interviewed are in or near the 'Innovation district'.

Seven reasons:

The Talent Pool.

Education, networking opportunities, professional development

Existing clusters

Heterogenicity

Firm state financial footing

Access to capital

Urban density

Young, and therefore cheaper, talent at that.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

Not sure if it's just Herald sensationalism, but reading this makes me feel like Russia has an honest political economy by comparison to ours.

Also, I have absolutely no problem with Massport selling off parcels to smaller investors - but has this guy built anything other than self storage units?

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

Great, so this Conroy guy is planning to put up a parking garage now next to the Cresset development. Does this guy sound unsavory to anyone else?

At least he has a stellar portfolio:

Well... OK so he can't develop anything of value whatsoever, but let's give this Massport insider a sweetheart deal to develop some of the most prime real estate on the waterfront. Sound good to everyone?

How does anyone who builds something like this live with himself? Usually developers/architects/construction workers can point to a completed project with pride, even something as simple as the Cape house posted above. But this???

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

I don't think pride enters into it.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

Has anyone else noticed that to get from the Blue Line to the Seaport you must go...

a) Blue Line to Gov Center -> Green Line to Park Street -> Red Line to South Station -> Silver Line to Seaport
or
b) Blue Line to State Street -> Orange Line to Downtown Crossing -> Red Line to South Station -> Silver Line to Seaport

Now, I suppose it isn't a terrible walk from Aquarium, but factor in weather, or even simply destination. Getting to Liberty Wharf or BoA Pavillion is suddenly a pain in the ass, particularly for regulars. Or think about Black Falcon Terminal and the Design Center and you're probably not even going to consider walking as an alternative. Now, Red Blue Connector could at least reduce the headache with one less transfer and less downtime, but still not the greatest situation.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

^Or you can do Blue Line to Airport -> Free shuttle bus to closest terminal -> Silver Line to Seaport?

Fewer changeovers, but probably longer... and two fares to boot.

True, forgot you could go to shuttles then Silver Line. With a pass at least it wouldn't be a problem with paying twice. Although, Black Falcon/Design Center again: you'd be taking an inbound SL1, then need to transfer to an outbound SL2. (Paying three times now, heh)

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

So, perhaps the SL should extend to the Blue Line Airport station, and loop there. Then make it's stops at the airport.

No transfer fees then as you would be going from subway to "subway". Now there is direct access from East Boston to the SB waterfront. I don't likt the surface bus portion of the SL, but it does offer this type of flexibility. Of course the tunnel under central parking with a central SL airport stop I mentioned before that continues to Airport station and to the new Casino with an SL headhouse/turn around here, would make it a functional subway.

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport

I would just to Blue line to Aquarium -> Hubway to Seaport :)
