Somerville Planning Department

FYI this is something I put together fairly recently:

Very similar things could be done for Alewife as well.

Definitely a big improvement, but please take the PCC up the Fellsway (This should not be a highway!!) where the Johnnie's Foodmaster plaza / MBTA car barns at Salem St. / Fellsway West, and the rest of Haines Sq. are in dire need of the same treatment you've drawn up for Meadow Glen. Run the line to Medford Sq. via either Fulton St. or around Roosevelt Circle and down Governor's Ave (stop at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital) or Forest St., to Medford Sq. From there bring the line down Mystic Ave to 16 and back to Wellington.

The neighborhoods near the Abandoned ROW can be served by an Orange Line stop between Wellington and Malden Center. The ROW could be used by the Orange line while they put it under ground so that the sound barriers could be removed and both sides of Commercial St. could be re-connected.

What are these pictures of? 'Pantages' is a name I associate with Southern California.

I don't see anything in Assembly Square that looks like this, so I'm confused. Where are the pictures from?

look at the third pix the old mall is there and everything else is proposed!

They look great. Thanks for posting them.

Do you have any information behind them? Who published these pictures? Where did they come from?

Oooh...insider info. In that case, a double thanks!

Can you at least tell us something about the proposed Pantages theatre shown in one of the pictures? Is this a live stage?

Where Foley Street hits the Orange Line, more or less.

In the aerial photo above, the large building at the southeast corner of Assembly Sq Drive and Foley Street has been demolished. (Some of you may remember it as the former location of Good Time Emporium.) That's where IKEA will build.

These renderings look great; shame the Assembly Square mall could not be redeveloped as a part of the project.

Why the sudden pics, 02124? Some news afloat?

A recent presentation on the new T Station.
Too bad they couldn't put IKEA in the Assembly Sq mall and do more mixed use in the areas closest to the T Station. No one's going to take the orange line to buy furniture. And that mall ended up being lower-end big box stores.

E-mail Print (4) Comments Text size Share Buzz up!Gov. Deval Patrick announced today that the state has released the first round of funding for the Assembly Square project in Somerville.

The Massachusetts Development Finance Agency has issued a $10 million note on behalf of the project, the first to receive funding through the Infrastructure Investment Incentive (I-Cubed) program.

The I-Cubed funds will support the first phase of public infrastructure improvements at Assembly Square, primarily roadway infrastructure to facilitate construction of an IKEA store. The first phase in development of the site is expected to create 500 new jobs. By final build-out, the project is expected to create thousands of permanent jobs.

Patrick announced in July that more than $65 million in state bond and federal stimulus funding commitments will support public infrastructure improvements at Assembly Square.

The state has issued a $10 million loan to support the first round of infrastructure improvements at Assembly Square in Somerville, Governor Deval Patrick announced on Tuesday.

The funds, which were released by the state Development Finance Agency, will be used primarily for roadway improvements necessary for the future construction of an Ikea store, Patrick said. The first phase of construction is expected to create 500 new jobs, he added.

"Assembly Square is a great project for the Commonwealth, and I am excited to see it moving forward," Patrick wrote in a statement. "This project will put people to work and deliver a host of economic, housing, and community benefits to the region."

The Assembly Square project, located on a 66.5-acre industrial site alongside Route 93 in Somerville, includes plans for a new MBTA Orange Line station and an Ikea store, accessible by a new system of public roadways. The completed mixed-use development will feature 18 buildings, including 2,100 residential units, 1.8 million square feet of office space, and 1.1 million square feet of retail space that includes restaurants, a cinema, and a 160-200 room hotel.

The state's $10 million note is the first issued through its I-Cubed program, which is financed by new state tax revenues generated from private development. According to MassDevelopment's website, I-Cubed funds will be granted to municipalities and developers to fund infrastructure projects that ignite private development and stimulate the economy.

"These funds will allow the City of Somerville to reclaim its waterfront along the Mystic River," said Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone in a statement. "The Assembly Square project is critical to the continued growth and vitalization of our community, placing housing, offices, and retail along a stretch of river long blocked off to our residents by highways and heavy industry."

Patrick announced in July that more than $65 million in state bond and federal stimulus funding commitments will support infrastructure improvements at Assembly Square. The construction of Ikea is targeted for completion by the end of 2011.
