Dude.

You have nothing to fear but fear itself. Seriously.

Dude, it was a theory based on observing the size of buildings immediately bordering Fenway. I hardly even go to Red Sox games, and haven't been for years. Baseball is the worst. Seriously.

Re: Skanska Fenway Project (Burger King) | 1350 Boylston Street | Fenway

This may or may not be valid, but I feel like one reason why this site would be kept on the short side is safety. For instance, they would not want to provide an angle where, say, an active shooter could sit on the roof (or even in an upper window) and pick off people in the stands at Fenway. Just a theory.

DZH22 -- Sox may well not want a tall building there -- But its all about wind currents and things like long home runs not Charles Whitman redux

Baseball is such a game of physics on the edge -- just a small alteration in wind currents could either make it impossible for say a Left Handed Pitcher to win or possibly convert some fraction of homeruns to fly outs

The earlier Sox owners / management built up Fenway itself behind home plate in 1988 adding a couple of extra levels for the 600 Club -- site of today's 406 / EMC Club with a glass wall directly above the Homeplate Screen

and then when next season the Sox lacked the traditional Long-Ball prowess -- there was huge speculation about altered wind currents

As a result [or at least just in case] when today's ownership took over they rebuilt that area once again circa 2004 so that there are now two open-air levels with any glass far recessed back: the "EMC Club" with 406 seats and concierge services, and above the "State Street Pavilion", with 374 seats and some pricey standing room.

Since the most recent renovations behind Home Plate were completed the Sox have won the World Series several times

I remember going to the glassed in area as a kid on a school field trip and Im very happy I was able to see it before and after. That is one memory I remember as a kid very well and I do think it was the right thing to change it back.

Tempting fates here...

Whig, I get what you're suggesting, but I would counter with the fact that wind studies are required as part of large development review. Even if it were a tall enough building to deflect higher-altitude winds to street level, this can be modeled fairly accurately these days. I also highly doubt that any higher wind speeds at street level would be deflected around the park and create a wind tunnel.

I'd say you'd face more opposition from the Sox owners toward a relatively tall development on the north side of Boylston Street over shadows than over wind deflection.

Re: Skanska Fenway Project (Burger King) | 1350 Boylston Street | Fenway

Nothing tall will get built close to fenway because of the wind mentioned and Sox ownership doesnt want a Wrigley situation where fans can watch the game for free from neighboring buildings.

They also probably dont want to have immediate neighbors that can whine about noise and other stadium issues, especially when it comes to concerts and ski jump events and whatever else they do in the off season/off days

DigitalSciGuy -- one word -- KnuckleBall -- no one can possibly do the modeling fine-enough grain [either in time or space] to predict the effects of wind on the flight of a KnuckleBall

or why the same ball [you can't deflate these] thrown the same way by the same opposing pitcher and launched from the same bat by the same batter, with the same swing will fall into the fielders glove in April, hit the bullpen wall in June and be a homerun in August

The answer in general is relative humidity and its effect on the density of the air and hence drag during the flight of the ball -- but no one can predict this for a specific instance

Actually, if it was even hypothetically predictable to determine the effects of a new tall building -- the Sox would love it -- it would give them the knowledge that the Celtics were claimed to possess about the locations of the "Fabled Dead Spots" on Ye Olde Parquette @ da Gahhdin -- e.g. when the wind is blowing in @ 12 - 16 MPH in April throw the pitch 2" inside and it will cross the plate at the knees

Statler -- good point -- Knuckleball -- all the rest is parenthetical and should just be a link

At this point, it's only a few more years until the Tasty Burger, Verb, and Star Market parcels get turned into towers as well, completing the transformation of Boylston Street.

In what order? My guess...

1. Star (Wegmans + Target combo will end this)
2. Tasty
3. Verb (closest to Fenway / the most sensitivity)

Don't take my Tasty!

LOL, that was my first reaction too! But honestly, I've got no objections to redeveloping the Tasty Burger site as long as they move to another retail space in the Fenway Triangle first... maybe 100 feet away at the corner of Boylston & Richard B. Ross Way (the new street).

Yeah, I've always assumed that if their parcel got redeveloped, they'd first secure a new location in one of the new developments. That old garage has character, but certainly not enough heritage to cry over Tasty Burger leaving it and possibly moving into a newer, bigger space.

Would you consider the Gulf and empty lot immediately next to it part of the 'Star Market block'? That corner is just begging for a complimentary landmark building to anchor that block.

Back to this development, has a facade sample been put up somewhere yet? I don't think I've seen one posted in this thread.

Re: Skanska Fenway Project (Burger King) | 1350 Boylston Street | Fenway

I suspect the former garage building on the south side of Boylston (with the nightclub, the former mixx etc) and the gas station next to it will go first. It's falling apart, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of attempts to market it etc. There's also a gas station across the street next to a 6 story building's parti wall. That I suspect will get built on sooner. No fenway view issues here...

That core seems like it takes up a lot of square footage relative to the potential floor plates
