I know everyone with architecture degrees hates the Verizon building, but I like it. There's an industrial vibe to it that is appealing to me.

I feel similarly, @Arenacale. And while a bit more height might have improved its proportions, I don't think it needed to be taller.
 
Its definitely unique, which is becoming surprisingly difficult to say about most towers being built today.
 
it looks like an in-window air conditioner from the '70s. that's not a good thing.

Exactly. It added some texture and interest. Without it, the cheap plastic box look is increased.
 
Was in Union Square this weekend and got to see this from the other side... Was honestly really surprised about how suddenly I noticed this on the skyline (I don't often go to Union Square). Reminds me of the time I 'suddenly' noticed Millennium Tower looking down Somerville Ave from Porter.
