The New Retail Thread

Hmmmmm, I wonder if Tesla will install a few charging stations either in the Pru Garage or somewhere in the neighborhood.

It wouldn't be a supercharger; they only build those along highways on the edge of the battery range from their owners' locations. The idea is that you hit up a supercharger when you're on a trip out of town. When owners are around home they just charge in their own garages.

As for typical "non-super"chargers, Tesla already has four of those at hotels (Sheraton, W, Four Seasons, and Millennium Bostonian) around the neighborhood.

The reason I asked about charging stations in the Pru Garage is Tesla opened up a showroom at Lenox Mall here in Atlanta and have maybe 6 charging stations in the parking lot outside the showroom so I wondered if the same would hold true for the new store at the Pru. Also, there are many Tesla's here in Atlanta but I rarely see any when we're up in the Boston area. I wonder if the cold winters have anything to do with that since the cold tends to drain the battery much faster than normal.

Are there any news about DTX retail improving at any point? I mean, are there any somewhat specialty (luxury) stores opening in DTX or will it forever stay as lower price range retail market (TJMaxx, H&M, etc)?

The retail market in dtx has already started to change: gap and forever 21 are new additions this year. I hope they don't go too high end, that's what Newbury st is for

Forever 21 is currently planned in DTX for a 3-level store at 449 Washington St. The only one in Boston right now is Newbury St (ironically). I think you meant Primark. Also, GAP in DTX is actually a GAP Factory Outlet, further emphasizing the fact that DTX is an affordable shopping district.

I think some higher end retail in DTX wouldn't be a bad thing. Primark and now Forever 21 (along with H&M, DSW, Walgreens and Marshalls) definitely serve the budget-minded market--I don't think all the retail needs to be like what you find in malls. Fenway seems to be going in this direction as well. Downtowns need a little glamor, I think.

I didn't mention Primark Cuz it felt like stating the obvious...I was talking about the same forever 21 you are Data, its just not open yet.

I like that its not too high end, but it'd be nice if it doesn't look like every suburban mall

Having a lot of similar options from suburban malls isn't a bad thing, to the extent that it keeps the city somewhat affordable as well as working as a countervailing force to supporting sprawl.

That said, I'd enjoy a healthy variety, particularly in the form of home-grown businesses if possible (more likely with restaurants/bars/cafes than clothes). Upper-end shopping options will come as more of these buildings are completed and occupied, including the Godfrey Hotel.

Does anyone know why there's no Nordstrom in Boston, despite there being one in Chestnut Hill? One could imagine it opening up downtown...

Bloomingdale's is in Chestnut Hill - and there's some question if they'll still be a tenant at 888 Boylston when it opens. Anyone have the latest?

As for Nordstrom, I couldn't agree more. Why don't we have a "real" Nordstrom downtown somewhere?! Providence, Chicago, LA, Seattle...They all have locations downtown.

FWIW, NYC is in the process of getting its first "real" Nordstrom- I'm sure one will come along for us soon enough. It would be great to have.

Nordstrom isn't in Boston bc the space they would need for the store would cost a fortune to lease...that's what I've been told in the past anyway.

Then how can Neiman Marcus or Lord and Taylor be in the city that just doesn't make sense to me that those other stores could make it and Nordstrom couldn't.

Gordon's Boston to Bring 600 Wines, Moody's Deli, and More to Downtown Crossing

http://boston.eater.com/2015/10/26/9614476/gordons-boston-wine-moodys-deli-winter-2015

Gordon's Fine Wine & Liquors (Waltham, Watertown, and Newton) will add a Boston proper location early this winter at 39 Temple Place in Downtown Crossing, and it will feature the city's only New England Charcuterie/Moody's Delicatessen counter, another Waltham specialty, says owner David Gordon. The store is meant to be an "experience...something beautiful, a place for people to gather."

The long, narrow space — dubbed Gordon's Boston — will include Enomatic wine machines so that customers can grab free tastes of an ever-changing selection of 48+ wines while browsing the store, which will have a selection of over 600 wines, 200 scotches, and many other spirits at prices Gordon describes as "Boston's best." Thanks to the well-established company's existing buying power, "just about everything will be the lowest [price] in the city." A little bit down the line, "a cool app" will enhance the in-store experience — more on that in the future. And out of the store, customers in Boston proper will be able to get deliveries in under an hour. (Delivery is also available beyond the city; it'll just take longer depending on the location.)

As for that deli counter, expect items like charcuterie, cheeses, truffle potato chips, wagyu beef jerky, and pre-made, grab-and-go sandwiches from Moody's. (A few months down the line, the offerings will expand to include sandwiches prepared to order and sliced meats.) It will basically be "a mini version" of the popular Waltham shop, according to Gordon.

Here comes some upscale retail in DTX...
