The New Retail Thread

Finally, someone figured out that all women want is a really good steak (and, apparently, to dress up for other women wanting really good steaks).

Modell's Sporting Goods is opening in Back Bay (Berkeley at Boylston) where CitySports used to be.

SoulCycle is opening in the new building across from MGH at Grove and Cambridge Streets. Wasn't 75 Chestnut supposed to open "75 on Cambridge" in that space?

I know everyone here is going to heartbroken to hear this, but...

The Burger King in Center Plaza is closing as of 5pm today.

It is reportedly being replaced by Zo's.

Burger King may not be your cup of tea, but this is a very busy restaurant - especially with customers who can't afford to drop $10+ on lunch (and yes, they are not all homeless people). Zo's, while good, is very pricey for lunch unless you are a 1%er.

I actually am legitimately disappointed by this. Sometimes a man just wants a cheap fast-food burger and fries. Ever since the UBurger in Faneuil closed (RIP) this has been the only spot north of Downtown Crossing (other than the little McDonald's counter in North Station) to satisfy those cravings.

And for an urban fast-food joint I always found this BK to be remarkably not sketchy.

an $8 sandwich is now only for 1%ers? Interesting. I've heard that about a $14 Sam LaGrassa's sandwich but never an $8 one.

It can't be more than a 5 min walk from the Center Plaza Burger King to the one at Tremont and Park and that's if you walk slow. It's about 3 blocks. However, I do agree that the sketch factor at the Center Plaza BK is very low especially compared to the one on Tremont which is awful.

You don't have the faintest clue how much money you need to be a 1%-er, do you?

For the record, I ate at that BK faaar more than I care to admit. This is actually a blow to me (though hopefully a boon to my waist line, cholesterol levels, etc...)

The Tremont St BK is juuust far enough away from my office to make going there a pain.

Coupled with the loss of the Finagle, my cheap/fast food options have been limited mostly to DD & Subway. Neither one is a favorite.

Zo charges $8 for an original gyro. It's pretty decent too. I'm not a 1% but I consider it pretty reasonable for the amount and quality of food you get. It's really not any more expensive than a meal at BK and is far more filling.

Well, Griddler's is 5 minutes down Cambridge Street and B.Good is a few minutes in the opposite direction for decent fast casual burgers. There is the McDonald's in N. Station and another BK right over on the corner of Winter and Tremont. It's not a big loss.

This must mean the Zo space upstairs at Center Plaza is going to be vacated. The BK spot is more accessible and visible, so it's an upgrade for them, but I'll be interested to see what fills the old spot. I wouldn't mind a better burger joint in this area. Shake Shack? Plz?

Gridler's is good but it takes forever (relative to BK) to cook their food. It's also ~2x the price. You get what you pay for but if you go there multiple times a week (which you shouldn't be doing anyway, I guess) it adds up quickly.

Edit: Yes, Zo's is moving from their old spot.

All very true. But since you can call in an order or place it online, it doesn't have to take any more time to get your food from Griddler's. Can't debate the price though. Griddler's (and any fast-casual burger place) is more expensive.

Frankly, I've been working in the area for 2 years. I've been to Griddler's once and that BK a total of zero times. I've also been to that B.Good and the McDonald's zero times combined. If there was a Shake Shack, Wendys, 5 Guys, Tasty Burger, or other greasy burger place in the area, I'd be eating more burgers at lunch. So it's easy for me to say i won't miss BK. I get why people like it.

Oh wait, I just checked Griddler's website and I will never go to there again. They are dead to me:

Griddler's website said:
Hours

Beacon Hill: Monday - Friday 11am - 9pm, Saturday & Sunday 12pm - 9pm
Boston Commons: 11am - 9pm Daily

Griddlers = gross. Tasty Burger = gross.

UBurger = solid local business and awesome burgers, handcut fries and shakes (Best of Boston frappe a few years back I believe). It's a shame the Faneuil location closed...

Quick question:

Do you pronounce it U-Burger (yoo-ber-ger) or Uber-ger (oo-ber-ger) like a portmanteau of uber and burger. Their slogan is "above all burgers" which supports my "uber" theory, but I've never heard anyone call it oo-ber-ger.
