The New Retail Thread

Chipotle is official. Signage just went up outside the back right corner of the 101 Seaport building.

Shake Shack at Watermark is accelerating their move into the neighborhood. Originally planned for mid-2017, the sign has been changed to say "anchoring in 2016" (you can see that they simply covered up the "7" and put a "6" on each vinyl). Guys were in there today digging up the floor.

Yoki signage has gone up outside 101 Seaport.

Aceituna Grill (Mediterranean) signage has gone up outside 101 Seaport.

These join By Chloe, the Juice Press, and SoulCycle.

Nice. Been empty way too long

Speaking of being empty and virtually next door to that new T.J. Maxx: anyone know what might be going here. ? Was a pub about a year+ ago. Seems like a prime spot to be vacant.

Aceituna is awesome. They have a Kendall Square location I used to go to. Good to hear that they are expanding

Well, it is a delicate balancing act to find the perfect tenant that complements Sweet & Nasty next door. ;)

Awesome sign that this one is a local business that's expanding. Would love to see more of this vs. New York chains that want Boston outposts. (But hey, the Seaport needs anything it can get in terms of quicker food right now...!)

This location has struggled for years. It was "Match" for awhile...then "94 Mass Ave"...then "Mass Ave Tavern" (the final iteration was actually a great spot).

I think the landlords are trying to hold out for something to bring in higher rents, but with this and some others nearby (think, the old Fossil store at the top of Newbury St.), there's plenty of great other retail space available nearby. They should get a restaurant back in here.

Stepping onto Mass Ave from Newbury always had a "TURN BACK! HIGHWAY!" feel to me. The Comm Ave underpass doesn't help either (seriously, just fill that in already) and Boylston is obviously a mess. This whole stretch is uninviting. This would change if the air rights projects ever actually happened.

I agree - one would think that the mass ave/newbury intersection could be so much better activated/utilized. The air rights project would definitely help. As would activating the little stub of newbury across mass ave - I always thought that had the potential house a nice little cluster of cafes and a shop or two (with commensurate updates to the streetscape of course). I thought the "other side cafe" might have been the start to that before it closed a couple of years ago. Meanwhile, there's the harvard club parking lot taking up precious space - can't something better be done with that? That would actually be a parcel that could be zoned for some height, one might think - though I am ignorant to details surrounding that parcel.

That site is cursed! Or maybe they just keep putting crap there. It's been at least 5 different places in the last 10-15 years. I think one incarnation that lasted the longest was Blue Cat Cafe and then at some point there was a place specializing in sliders.

Cafe Nero opened today in Mariott Residence Inn on Congress. Now we have 4 coffee shops(Nero, Barringtons, DD and Starbucks) within 2 city blocks...

Does Flour and Au Bon Pan count as coffee shops as well?

I'd say yes. I think this 2 block radius is the coffee capital of Boston. BTW, Cafe Nero is great!

CVS poster is up on the large retail space underneath the main building of The Watermark Seaport.

There is also a neighborhood meeting on 5/24 at 6pm in Factory 63 to discuss "75 Seaport" a new restaurant seeking a liquor license. There will also be a presentation on converting parts of the buildings on Thompson and Farnsworth into retail spaces.

That also makes 5 locations for Cafe Nero -- from 0 in the US to 5 in Boston in 2+ years -- fantastic

Cafe Nero is the Crème de la Crème of the recent EU invaders -- and they are most welcome

Meh. I'm glad that there's another lunch option in the area, but in terms of coffee, I much prefer Barrington or Starbucks.

The pastries arent bad, but with Flour right around the corner, it isn't as if the area was hurting for baked goods.

^No offense, but are we talking coffee or syrupy caffeine dessert drinks?
