The New Retail Thread

Went into Eataly yesterday. Very compact and tight, or maybe it just felt like it because of thousands of people in there. Gonna check it out more in a month when everything dies down a little.

Spoke to Tesla employee, their new store opens Tuesday morning.

Walked by at 3, they had a line all the way into the center court with a bouncer letting people in.

Just walked by now, (9:00) short line but still a bouncer and packed inside. Looks like you're straight ip not allowed to go in through the boylston entrance, have to go through the mall.

Sounds like the opening for Eataly was pretty successful......

"The team behind Eataly sent out some stats about its opening day. If you want to get a sense of just how major this was, read on. And know this: Everything below was sold between 4 and 11 p.m. only on Eataly's first day of business.

250 pounds of mozzarella curd (4,000 ounces) and 1,000 mozzarella balls at our fresh-production lab
500 Rossopomodoro pizzas at the restaurant La Pizza & La Pasta
700 cannoli at the Cannoli Cart, an exclusive offering at Eataly Boston
1,800 pieces of pizza alla pala and 500 rustic loaves of bread (700 pounds) at the bakery
300 bags of housemade chips throughout the market
2,500 coffee drinks at the two cafes, Vergnano and Lavazza"

The closing was scheduled in advance.

You think North End business owners have a bad case of the feels?

My anecdote isn't even hyperbole... I'm pretty sure I've witnessed Mike's Pastry in the North End sell 700 cannolis in 1 hour before.

The city's big enough that Eataly + the North End can coexist... once the honeymoon dies down at Eataly, there will be a homeostasis.

Agree. The population of Boston/metro region is growing faster than in decades. Add in many west end residential developments & increasing Boston tourism, the North End will be fine. There's room for both.

Someone on Reddit posted about the Tilted Kilt opening in January over near Fenway.

By Chloe is opening at the Van Ness (under Target across from Sweetgreen).

And I thought that Boston was a place free of establishments created to objectify women :/

what's the big deal if the people who work there do so voluntarily? It's not like that is the only waitress gig in town and you are either forced to work there and wear a tight/revealing shirt or go without a job. If it's not your bag, don't go. Every city has places like this.

Bye Comcast! Verizon will start installing Fios service in Boston tomorrow. Verizon is expected to spend 300 million dollars to wire the entire city with Fios.

Verizon has been installing the FIOS fibers for several weeks. Depends on where you are in the city.

Also, don't rejoice too quickly -- the installation roll-out will take years.

They are also installing tons of micro-cell towers on sidewalks as they go along (following the fiber roll-out). Pretty much of a nuisance, as they have big bases that block narrow sidewalks.

Cafe Nero in the Burnham Building is now open. Is it me, or are there way too many Cafe Neros? The one in Millennium Place is just down the street!

Never enough! The one at MP and the one in the South End routinely have no places to sit.

Considering you can trip anywhere in Boston and fall into a Dunkin I think a few Neros will not hurt.

Exactly. Caffe Nero capacity is defined by availability of comfy chairs, not by number of cash registers. Availability in Millennium Place is strained.
