The New Retail Thread

Askenazy said it would be more local, but their first new tenants were Uniqlo and Sephora, which just increased the generic mall ambiance. I miss the little shops that used to be upstairs in the North & South market buildings... they had unique, local products but were replaced with office space and chain stores (including Disney and Urban Outfitters).

They need to offer some kind of local product incubation scheme if they want to make it more attractive. It's ironic that the Boston Public Market has supported those kind of tenants but the historic Quincy Market hasn't.

They also need innovations like pop-up restaurants to enliven the quick bite scene.

Not exactly current retail news, but not sure this deserves its own thread yet. The big parking lot on Newbury Street (278 Dartmouth) is up for sale.

FWIW this is what used to be on the site before it became a parking lot in the 50s:

No. someone assembled the apartment building and the houses you see into one parcel and razed them all for a parking lot in the late 50s. You can see that the apartment building is very narrow, including only five units, and so maybe there was less money to be had at the time in rental income than in parking lot income.

Ugghhh.. still hating that Sephora ended up being the tenant in the glass space in Faneuil Hall next to Quincy Market and promptly put in opaque film all around. It could have been a great space for almost anything else.

But then again, I (probably somewhat irrationally) hate Sephora in general.

Damn, that is sad. The building looked great.

Newbury Comics is moving up the street to the old Converse space.

Roots has closed on Newbury (after just a few months in business).

The Wine Press has opened in the Pierce building.

Staples has closed in the Landmark Center.

Papa Gino’s ctown is closed...it wasn’t part of the initial wave.

Wouldn't surprise me if that isn't part of the reason there is a Landmark District there now. It will be interesting to see what is proposed. There has been some great contemporary infill on the street and some not so great.

People's United Bank and Polka Dog Bakery are opening at 121 Seaport. Just what we need...another bank in a prime spot.
