The New Retail Thread

Surprised that no posts yet about the just opened Time Out market food court that just soft-opened in the Landmark in Fenway. My brother who works a few doors down took me there on 4th of July afternoon for lunch and it was PACKED. Pricey/gourmet foodcourt that is going to be a sure hit with expense accounts and folks saving up for a once in a while nice
Lunch. Steve Samuels is a genius. I was very impressed at the different menus at the stalls and the tremendous quality. Some better values than others (I’m looking at you, Revolution Health Kitchen with your $10.75 Large bowl ( bowl was large, but 1/3 filled) of Red Curry Coconut Lentil soup that had no taste of curry nor coconut). The mom and pop gellateria was superb (but already sold out of many flavors as the owners have been shocked by the heavy foot traffic - great story and I’m rooting for them to handle the success since their product is incredible) as was the pizza from a stall whose name I forget.

Dunno, given it's location (kind of have to drive there) I don't know if a brewery is such a good idea.

Thats why I said for the malls that are actually failing. Especially with Widomaker right across the street.

There are breweries across the state you have to drive to. Not sure why a mall would be any different/ a problem? Tree House, arguably the most sought after brewery in the state (all of New England) is entirely built around people driving to/from it.

Not to mention the fact that Dorchester Brewing Company already exists a couple hundred yards from South Bay.

It'd be nice if they opened up a bar in Boston, but I don't think it'd ever happen.

True. Didn't think of that/still haven't been there.

It'd be great. They're certainly producing enough at their facility to do it. Perhaps their Back Bay pop up beer garden is the closest we'll get? Only two more nights this summer: https://www.bostonmagazine.com/restaurants/2019/06/06/tree-house-boston-beer-garden/

Thumbs up for Time Out Market. Very high quality food at a range of prices. It's like a kicked up food court with alcohol and made-to-order food rather than the usual pre-made mediocre crap you get at malls.

The Pru Tree House pop up is a disaster. I tried to go a couple weeks ago, and I would have been able to drive to the brewery, picked up a four pack, and drank one at home on my couch before I got a beer at the pop up.

The line just to get in was ridiculous and then there was an even longer line in the court yard of everyone trying to get a beer from one of the two or three bartenders serving. Horrible execution for what could be a really cool event.

Very good to know. I've enjoyed the trip out the Charlton to visit the brewery (it's a beautiful property). I'll continue to do that and rotate between the outdoor beer gardens and patios around here.

Speaking of which, Night Shift Lovejoy Wharf's patio is now open. Not a bad spot (though it's a little narrow).

I didn't even realize they were doing a pop-up; sad to hear that it wasn't executed well. That sounds really rough.

What's old is NEW again. At the location of the current Dave & Busters behind the South Shore Plaza, there used to be a microbrewery. Brew Moon Microbrewery. I seem to remember there was some gun fire or shoot-out at the Braintree location, but I can't seem to find it now. It was a LONG time ago for you youngsters! Brew Moon was one of the first restaurants that brewed their own beer onsite.

I still can't find the story I was looking for about the fight or shooting via Google. (Maybe it was BEFORE Google?) Anyway, it became a Rock Bottom Brewery in 2000 and it closed in 2009. #southshoretrivia

I don't see anything about a fight or shooting there in the Globe archives. It does say that the whole chain went bankrupt (4 locations) and was bought out by Rock Bottom breweries.

PS:
Q: What's the special at the 99 in Charlestown?
A: Duck!

Yes, there was a Brew Moon location downtown in the Transportation Building that turned into a Rock Bottom. Ironically, Rock Bottom lives up to its name. Terrible food/drink.

From Boston Restaurant Talk:

"It's like deja vu all over again, as Eddie Merlot's is once again trying to open in Boston's Seaport District (this time replacing another restaurant)."

Not really "replacing" another restaurant. The column says this will go into the shuttered Uncle Pedro's Cantina. (I can't think of the name but you know what I mean.)

The are finally working on the old Barnes and Noble space in Downtown Crossing. Here's a view inside:

^Say what you want about Sam Adams/Boston Beer, but this has the potential to be a pretty neat space. Far better than the sunken, cavern-like Hillstone.
