Coulda been worse...?

Not to mention it was closed for almost SIX YEARS after the last fire, and was about to reopen. There was a ton of preservation work that was required to bring it back, so that's going to be a huge setback. Even if it's salvageable it's going to be a long time before it's useful in any way.

Jacob Wirth building currently on fire, 4-alarms. This one is probably a goner unfortunately. Real sad as it was a rather unique piece of historical architecture in that part of the city.

Boston Fire Department estimated damages at $3 million

^^^ The rear of the building, including the roof, looks relatively untouched. Though there may be smudge marks by the third floor windows on the right. The fire seems to have been concentrated on the third floor and the Stuart side roof.

From the fire, and post-fire images, no scorch or smudge marks can be seen. These marks are caused by fire or heavy smoke. Fire out the windows can compromise masonry. A lot of water damage though.

^^^ This image shows that all the hose streams are directed at the third floor and roof. It appears there was no fire on the ground floor (the restaurant).

I would think they dismantled and stored interior décor and fixtures when construction started. IMO, serious damage but the structural integrity of the building does not appear to have been compromised.

The clocktower building in Kendall is getting a Bakey:

Reading the story posted by @bigpicture7, they mention Tatte Bakery. Tatte is really expanding to the burbs with location in Hingham opening soon.

This is cool--I've been to the downtown Boston and Brookline locations and generally think their offerings are pretty solid. Kendall is starting to have an abundance of coffee / baked goods places.

We now have 13 Tatte's in MD/VA/DC

A new "ground up" Cane's chicken Fellsway Plaza in Medford/Wellington. I think it has a park and eat area, something like Sonic?

New Taco Bell Cantina is proposed for the first floor of the new 6 story building in Maverick Square. It definitely is getting mixed feedback...

In my opinion as well as others' deductions, the thing that leaves these high-rent restaurant spaces open is the lack of tenants who will pay that rent and have a liquor license (some needing to pay for a new one or somehow get one granted) because the liquor tends to pay the bills iirc. So a chain coming rather than an empty space?

it's kind of sad seeing all these Taco Bell Cantinas come into the region. I felt like for a long time you wouldn't see any YUM! Brand stores, and now every 3rd liquor license is for a Taco Bell Cantina. I wish we could see these licenses go to new bars or new restaurants, instead of a place where I can use a tablet to put 5 shots of patron in my frozen baja blast.
