I don't remember that! (How, is a mystery -- do you have any pix of what you're referring to?) I recall this, but no metal grate.
Have to imagine it's a multi-story ceiling height. Balloon framing is no longer preferred/used unless absolutely necessary pretty much.
But the other photos: holy top plates! That's a ton of wood being slapped together - gonna have some pretty sizeable thermal bridges going on.
I believe this will be a public pass-through to the park on Lake St. Not sure if the house on the left will be giving up its side for the path.
