Steve Bailey wrote a couple of months ago that construction would start by the end of the year but has it even been approved yet?

BRA approves 26-story Theater District complex

The Boston Redevelopment Authority cleared the way for a 26-story, 350,000-square-foot, mixed-use complex including a W Hotel, at Stuart and Tremont streets on a Theater District parking lot. The building will also have about 125 condominiums, with about 12,000 square feet of restaurant, spa, and retail space, according to the BRA. SW Boston Hotel Ventures LLC, the developer, expects to break ground as early as spring on the $200 million project, which is expected to create more than 300 permanent jobs. (Thomas C. Palmer Jr.)

If anyone gets the Globe, check to see if there is a rendering. I'm sure there has to be some change since it was first proposed as a Loews hotel in 2001.

The single most prominent empty lot in downtown Boston (though Hayward Place ranks a close second). I'll be thrilled to see it developed.

Oh, wait a minute ...

I'm confused ...

So, this isn't the building replacing the ticket booth, right next to the Wilbur ... it's across the street, where the parking lot is, next to where Dominic's used to be and next to Rumors & Warrenton????

If so, it's great!

Correctamundo. These two projects both seem to have a sort of jerky undulation to their glass facades that might end up looking really nice next to eachother. (although the W renders leave much to be desired..)

This is next to the Shubert Theatre. It's a crime that it has remained a vacant lot for so many decades.

Theater District?s W Hotel to Add New Housing, Over 200 New Hotel Rooms

The BRA Board approved the W Hotel, a project that will bring much-needed hotel rooms and new housing units to the bustling Theater District. Centrally located nearby to numerous theater destinations, the new W Hotel will provide the area with 235-plus hotel rooms, approximately 123 residential condominium units, as well as 12,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, and spa uses. Underground parking is also planned. The 26-story, 350,000 square-foot hotel and residential building will replace a vacant lot at the intersection of Stuart and Tremont Streets.

The BRA Board originally approved the proposed hotel in June of 2001, then known as the Lowes Hotel Project. Due to the economic downturn that followed the events of 9/11, the project was never constructed. The original proposal called for a larger hotel component without any residential units, and a greater amount of space for restaurant and retail uses. Additionally, the Emerson College performance space that was also included in the earlier proposal will now be located at the new, recently-approved Paramount Center project.

The development team, SW Boston Hotel Ventures LLC, anticipates a ground-breaking for the more than $200 million project as soon as spring of 2007. A spring 2009 completion date is expected. The project will generate approximately 250 construction jobs, and more than 300 permanent jobs.

?though this sentence could do with an adverb:

a project that will bring much-needed hotel rooms and new housing units to the bustling Theater District.
How about ?sporadically bustling??

Or ?modestly bustling??

Or maybe ?formerly bustling??

They should have made the "Time Square Project" the same height as this so it provideds a streetwall. Owell, it seems like this section of the city will become more exciting.

Yes, and about time.

Hey, this is Boston. When we do New York, it has to be Boston-style: by half-measures. We don't want to be mistaken for New York.

If this latest rendering represents the current design, then it appears they've removed the zig-zagging facade, which, IMO, was the only thing that lent this building's form any interest whatsoever. It also created a visual break in the building's wide, monotonous facade facing Stuart St., which made it a good deal more tolerable than it appears to be in this last rendering. Hopefully they haven't cheaped-out and its just inaccurate.

They are still looking for a project in Boston, but don't expect an announcement any time soon. It will probably be years before anything comes to pass.

W-Boston Hotel and Residences Going Up


Nearly 10 years after introducing plans to build a high-rise at Stuart and Tremont streets, Sawyer Enterprises will finally begin constructing the tower within the next two months.

Sawyer received local permits to build the 309-feet project in 2001, but the construction was held up because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, said John Connolly, Sawyer's vice president of development, at an April 4 Chinatown Safety Committee meeting.

The glass-and-steel tower will house 235 hotel rooms and 123 condominiums.

Costing $230 million, the four-star hotel and residential high-rise will take two years to construct.
