In the rendering, it appears there are 3 floors above the indents before the crown begins which look equivalent to maybe 2 floors? So 2 more stories of height
This looks far shorter than it is from almost every angle, looking shorter than MT from most sides. Even from the places you see it the clearest, it's underwhelming and will look like in-fill. I doubt the 20-30 feet extra of crown will make much difference. It's not offensive, it's just... there.
Yeah any building in this spot, due to both surroundings like MT, 33 Arch, 110 Federal, 100 High, 99 High, etc. AND the low FAA clearance, will be diminishedIt's pretty impressive from Dewey Square and the steps in DTX, but it is filler from most other angles. For one of the city's top 5 tallest buildings to be filler is both impressive (as a testament to the density of the Financial District) and sad (as we don't often get buildings like this).

the Flatiron parcel across from it, Pi Alley Garage
Besides from the South, it's also extremely prominent from the Western views (when not hidden by the Back Bay bigs), particularly from within the city. This plus State Street really fill out the view from the public Gardens. This building dominates the views down many streets from the Back Bay, or at least let's say it "co-dominates" with Millennium Tower. Also, while it only has a few feet to go, those feet will be the most visible part of the building.
Once South Station Tower is up we're going to have our old plateau back, except larger overall and with an additional level at the top. Basically it will be like we took the 1980's-2015 plateau and gave it steroids and SGH (skyline growth hormone). This is also apparently only a few feet short of the FAA limits for this parcel. Those of you who wanted tall enough to really "be seen" (ie 700'+) should lament and/or focus on sites such as 1 Bromfield, Hurley, North Station area, the new State Street building leaving 100' on the table, the Flatiron parcel across from it, Pi Alley Garage, Back Bay Garage, Hynes Convention Center, Kings (Back Bay) Garage, many sites in Kendall, and all of North Point. There's a lot of prime parcels that are going to or already did underbuild from a height perspective, but Winthrop really isn't one of them, despite the 15 year dog-and-pony show that led us to this point.
Now that's an angle to showcase the prominence!

But it still doesn't look all that tall nor more impressive than what's around it, and I think that's what most people's points are. We (foolishly) expected it to be much more of a stand-out.Now that's an angle to showcase the prominence!
