It doesnt even match this!

Surely thats illegal.

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

Blame it on a bad paint chip. That was the excuse the developer and BU used for the Commonwealth Hotel. This is BU's chosen style, look at the new BU Med dorm in the south end.

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

Commonwealth Hotel II is exactly what this is.

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

BTW: has anyone seen the ass-end of this thing that currently faces Commonweath Ave. I know it'll likely be unseen in years to come of BU does some infill on the corner, but for now, it's an eyesore. The most prominent feature is a swath of slate-colored Alucobond large enough to cover an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Check out item number 234 this thread. Photo of the north side of the building facing Bay state road.

I still dont get how the NIMBYs let this get through

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

Is bricklaying an actual profession anymore? Is it not worth it? Tired of seeing obvious panels going up with awkward lines cutting up the whole facade.

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

Soo...I thought the whole lowrise portion was supposed to evoke the coloration of the rowhouses along the street...not just the round corner portion? God, this is such an awkward blob.

It would have been so much better if they had just aligned the windows with the existing context (and separated them - note how the windows in the context are never 1 vertical piece). Whoever designed this didn't pay attention in their contextual analysis class.

A modern building can be entirely contextual if designed properly:

BU owns almost this entire street. What BU doesn't own are a few MIT fraternity and coop houses. (I lived at 111 Bay State when I attended MIT.) The one house that BU demolished was not old or historic enough to be protected. So there's nobody around to protest, really.

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

Not so bad after all. I can comprehend it now.

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

What's the story behind this open lot?

It belongs to BU's Naval ROTC program, which is housed in the building to the right.

Re: B.U. East Campus Center (100 Bay State Rd)

OK, but I'm wondering when it was torn down and why. I don't think BU would take down a townhouse to create an empty lot.
