From Northeastern MP1 sits closer than MT. Closer buildings always look a little taller. This is probably more like 490'.

Yeah, it started in Roslindale, but there hasn't been a Roache Bros. there in decades. Many of us Rozzie folks do shop at the one in West Roxbury, and they have their community center and skating rink funded by the Roache family foundation. Definitely seems like the association moved a bit southwest from the origin point.

As for the new store in DTX, it's fantastic, and clearly oriented toward making a high volume of small sales, rather than serving weekly grocery shoppers. The space seems smaller than the old basement, but they have made good use in terms of layout. i especially like the high shelves, increasing the density of product per square foot. And the single line checkout system is genius.

It is. The old basement was also under where the tower is now, plus it was two levels deep.
They plan on expanding another 10,000 sq ft after the tower is completed.

Also, the single line system works pretty well but can get a bit wonky.
 
Anyone know the latest word on the rough schedule for topping out and completing the building?

Should be interesting to see what they add when they knock the far wall down. They already have a pretty decent selection.

And the single line system works if the cashiers correctly prompt the queue system to call you down to their register. The automated announcement is also absurdly wordy with her over-polite 'Please proceed to register X'; at any given Whole Foods in Manhattan that takes advantage of the single queue approach, the automated announcement just says 'Register x'. By the time she's done with her eloquent introduction to the register, it's history, and your cashier's blood type, you've read the number on the screen, are halfway to the register, and just hearing the number while the next customer is awkwardly standing there waiting for the next 10-second announcement.

Quite often, I go down there and a manager is manually marshalling people to registers and s/he is often just saying the register number; no long awkward pauses between announcing the next available register. I'm also wondering if it's a problem with cashiers needing to manually prompt the queue management system rather than the queue system automatically knowing when they're available.
 
Good god, you'd think the checkout process was the end of the world by that post. I've been very impressed with Roche Bros crowd control and checkout system. I think they intentionally put an associate there to direct people to registers because Roche Bros likes that personal touch and this is a very high profile location with extremely high volume.

What are some key elements of that expansion?

In 2016, based on current state law, we’ll be eligible to acquire two liquor licenses. It’s our intention to apply for a retail beer and wine license in the city and add that to the store offering. It’s one of the most requested things that we’ve been asked so far, and while it’s a ways away, it’s definitely part of our overall plan.


What else can customers expect?

There are a couple of areas in the store right now that we knew going in would be underutilized in the short term. Clearly our frozen food selection is minimal at this point, and the dairy section is pretty tight. Both of those get corrected in the next rendition. We would hope to add a bulk food department — which is buying out of bins — and then there’s also room for more frozen food, more dairy.

The expansion space will be behind the existing dairy cases into the basement of Millennium Tower. When can Roche Bros. get in there for an expansion?

We’re targeting mid-2016. The space exists right now — it’s just a shell. But we can’t open in that space until the owner has their full occupancy permits. I think the upshot is the building will be basically complete.

So it doesn't sound like they are going to move the deli. That's too bad, it's a pretty awkward set up as it is right now.

Looking at the State Street building (which is about 505ft), I'd put this at roughly 480 feet so far.
