Allston-Brighton Infill and Small Developments

Sadly, that Santander bank is unquestionably doomed. A folded plate roof! So rare in this area and it will surely be demolished with no protest whatsoever.

If it has the stink of brutalist modernism ... it will be ground up and used for fill in short order.

Tuesday deadline: Support safe Soldiers Field Rd crossings

Tomorrow is the deadline to submit comments on the DCR project to make better crossings between our neighborhood and the Charles River at Everett St, Telford St, and hopefully also Smith Field. Please submit comments at https://www.mass.gov/forms/dcr-public-comments

There are a lot of good things already being planned for this project and several ways it could be better.

2-way bike/walk paths that are 12' wide w/3' shoulders, per @MassDOT guidelines

Add trees & new lighting. Remove overhead utilities

Add a crossing at Smith Field

The entire Telford St overpass should be widened to 14’. The switchback on the river-side should be eliminated. If this can't be done, it should be replaced with an at-grade crossing.

Narrow the 75' long curb cut at the Harvard parking lot on Everett St. Create 1 entrance & 1 exit, each ~10’ wide
Add landscaping between the parking lot and path.

Soldiers Field Road is 82’ wide @ Everett Street.
This is too wide for a 4 lane parkway.
Consider adding curb extensions, reducing lane and shoulder width, and modifying the 14’ wide median to shorten the crossing distance.

WBZ studio property will be redeveloped, including a new studio for the TV station. WBZ Radio left last week for Wellington.

Very interesting. Some years ago, Harvard proposed to build WBZ radio and TV a new station at 172 Lincoln (the vacant CCF property that Harvard bought). In exchange, Harvard would get the WBZ property on Soldiers Field Rd. IIRC, the deal fell through when ownership of the station changed hands.

King Street Properties has his filed an LOI for 500,000 SF of lab space on Western Ave. behind the WBZ property. Name (for now) is NEXUS on Western Ave:

Lots of individual lots in this one. Here's a summary:

But it's soooooo Instagram-able! Surely they have a wall in the lobby with a pink neon sign saying something like "rest pretty" too.

Nobody's gonna post that building on Instagram...

^ You're probably right, but I think that's the intent here. It's so self-consciously loud and "hip"
