Green Line Type 10 Procurement

Saw this when reading about the new OL trains out of service again; Quote;

The MBTA recently said the transit agency will soon be taking bids for two more large train-car contracts: 100 more bi-level Commuter Rail cars — with options for another 100 — and 165 of the new, much larger “Type 10” Green Line cars the T plans to roll out as part of an overhaul of that line. ;End Quote;
What's the source of the quote?

*BUMP*

The RFP closed Wednesday for the Type 10 order. I guess we'll find out soon who bid what for our future shopping pleasure.

Note: we've got a long way to go before a final bid gets selected, given that GLT specs are still being refined. But the returned bids will spell out who the key players are and how elastic they're willing to be for our needs.

...and after another pregnantly long wait, a 14th Type 9 has finally entered service. 10 to go...mysteriously AWOL car 3906 still mysteriously AWOL in the sequential numbering.

The MBTA bidding website suggests that in fact the RFP did not close and has been extended to August, I would imagine likely as a result of the pandemic limiting bid responses. https://bc.mbta.com/business_center...ls_management/invitation_for_bids/Default.asp

States that RFP 367F-19 closes 08/11/2020

Meanwhile, while the New Red/Orange Cars thread starts losing grip on reality. . .

Third-from-last Type 9 delivery arrived on the property last week for testing. CAF only has 2 units left to deliver. 16 in-service, 6 in-testing. Overall they're noticeably more frequent these days on the general rotation. Last Sat. I noticed them taking up about 1 out of every 4 B Line trips over a couple-hour span along Comm Ave.

With 202 active cars, the GL fleet is now the largest it's been since the last Boeings were retired 13 years ago. Max-size roster is 219 when figuring 8 more Type 9 acceptances, 2 Type 7 rebuilds that are short-term idled for shop work, and 7 Type 8's that are sidelined long-term from unavailable parts (to be fixed when midlife fleet component refresh program goes out to bid).

We're now sitting pretty much on the fleet uptime threshold for giving 3-car trains another go. Trialing it on the D and/or B could be something they seek to do on experimental basis quickly after completion of the ongoing track replacement blitzes and temp bustitutions. Mid-Fall schedule revision after the state's passed through all its most crucial biz-open phases would be the ripest time to try it, because they can do the data collection and tweaking while the system is still operating very unstressed by the in-progress ridership recovery and operating under a shorter/simpler dispatching bench with service truncated temporarily at North Station.

Whatever happened with this thread? isn't the MBTA still looking to buy some of these extended vehicles? Looks to me like they've lost interest in them!! :confused:

They have only issued a Request For Information so far. Soliciting proposals was never slated to happen before 2022, and the procurement itself was to be spread over 8 years to accommodate all the GLT-related upgrade work to surface stations required before they can be deployed on all brances.

If you think the Orange Line thread moves too slowly for your liking...you best learn some patience before protesting too hard about wanting a ride on the Type 10's sooner. This was never pre-advertised by anyone as a quick process.

The MBTA website indicates that the RFP for the Type 10 Procurement was posted on 8/11/2020 and is still in the review and authorization phase. See below for the summary text of the RFP:

Description: Dear Madams/Sirs,

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) invites qualified Transit Vehicle Manufacturers (TVMs) to submit Proposals for the provision of 165 a new fleet of “Type 10” light rail vehicles for MBTA’s Green Line, in accordance with Technical Specifications No. VE-19-049 and the RFP Contract Documents.

Qualified Transit Vehicle Manufacturers (TVMs) interested in submitting a Proposal in response to this RFP must email GL10RFP@mbta.com to request copies of the RFP 367F-19 and Technical Specifications VE-19-049.

Of course, the existence of an RFP does not mean that this is happening anytime soon.

I hope that THIS is the one that they go with!!
Extra-long Trolley proposed for the MBTA..jpg

Don't get too excited. This is what they initially showed as what the Type 9 was going to look like:

Far from what we ended up with:

The one in the top 2 pics has been killed. That was posibly a Type 9. The one in the pic that I posted is one of the proposals for a Type 10. Also, they are planning to make the Type 10 a completely low-floor, making it ADA-accessible across the board. There would be no stairs inside, nor at the front doors. Note the one in the pic that I posted. It's all low-floor, making all the windows bigger. :)

I actually really like the Type 9s we got. The front glass is one big curved panel instead of a tiny set of windows with thick pillars.
The original proposal is smoothed and rounded over a little too much imo. And lets be honest, attempts at aerodynamics for the Greenline are pretty moot anyway lol

Never understood why Pininfarina even put their name on the Type 8 :giggle:

These were nice looking when the T first got them. Now they look so old, dismal & dull. Especially since the Type 7's were given a complete facelift. Also, they have a kind of dim lighting inside & some of the pads on the seats are cut up by vandals. I heard nothing about them also getting a make-over. Maybe the T is planning to dump them. I don't know. But we'll see what happens with them. :unsure:

Since the Type 10s will theoretically be a more or less off-the-shelf model and not a custom job, hopefully we'll get something prettier. Though all I care about is that it's less hideous than the Type 7s.

An off-the-shelf vehicle is likely to look like one of these (the most recent models from the main manufacturers). All of these models are widely used worldwide; I've noted which ones are used in the US and Canada. All images from Wikimedia Commons - click for the file information page. In many cases I would expect to see a blunter nose for the Type 10 - long streamlined noses will not fit in the restricted loading gauge of the Tremont Street Subway.

Siemens S70/S700: widely used in the US (Portland pictured)

Bombardier Flexity Freedom: used on several Canadian lines (ION pictured)

CAF Urbos: used on several US lines (Houston pictured). The Type 9 is a modified version of the Houston model.

Alstom Citadis Spirit: used on several Canadian lines (Ottawa pictured)

Kinki Sharyo: a Type 10 would likely be similar to this P3010 in LA.

AnsaldoBreda (now Hitachi Rail Italy) Sirio: not yet used in North America, but common elsewhere (Milan pictured). Their last US effort, to my knowledge, was the P2550 for LA in 2007-2011.
