Two Building Life Science Project Approved in Mission Hill

500 huntington

“Wentworth with development partners The Owens Companies, Waldwin Development & The Fallon Company has won approval for a two-building lab/office project at 500 Huntington Avenue in Mission Hill. The project will include 640,000 square feet of new development and contribute just over $7M to the Neighborhood Housing Trust. As part of the community benefits, this project will work with Wentworth Institute of Technology to facilitate a workforce development program to provide pathways to life science careers for Boston residents. In addition, parts of the project will employ Wentworth students.”

I know, I know, "labs", etc. but the size, etc. of these on Huntington Avenue - almost directly across from the MFA - are truly blocky and immense. For Huntington Ave perspective, I just wish there was some way to make them taller and leaner, instead of so "Kendall Square - Volpe-ish".

Northeastern is proposing an academic building on its triangle portion of the block. Given their recent buildings, it may soften this bulk.

Walked by and the fence around the athletic field is now wrapped with "Coming Soon!" banner describing it as lab space. I hadn't seen it before but maybe it's been up for awhile.

Color me skeptical that the 11-foot pathway between the two buildings will see much foot traffic. It's supposed to make the walk from the Green Line (Museum) to the Orange Line (Ruggles) easier; I guess it does that, if you're in the buildings themselves?

I've never been one to cry "shadows!" about any Boston project but I will admit I'm a bit nervous about shadows on the MFA. I can't find the shows study (yet) in the BPDA documents so I don't know. The buildings seem to be situated to minimize blocking the afternoon sun.

The MFA can't be happy but maybe it's just the way it is now.

Northeastern is planning a high rise building on its portion of that block.

Honestly, yeah, that would blend right in. From that point you've got the picture from, what you see is a bunch of tall Northeastern buildings. I assume something similar will end up where Punter's Pub used to be. Peeking to the right is the tall, modern Mass. College of Art and Design. Those old apartment buildings across the street from MFA are increasingly the odd ones out on that stretch of Huntington.

I also think that's totally fine.

Northeastern owns those two old apartment buildings. They and the Punter's Pub corner will be redeveloped as anew academic building per the Northeastern IMP.

It’s really a shame that every project in the city has to be “contextual” except for this shit.
