MassDOT Pike Parcels 12 - 15 | Boylston St. and Mass. Ave | Back Bay

I think the selected proposal was by far the best from an urban design sense and it will help knit Boylston St together. It also seemed to be the most interesting architecture of the 3, I'm surprised at the negative reaction here. The development is starting from a good spot, the key to success...

UMass Boston Developments | Columbia Point | Dorchester

A good article about the projects at UMass Boston and the opening of the Science building in today's Globe. Some good pictures too, that I can't figure out how to upload. Should be cool to see this one up close...

Ferdinand Building Renovation + Addition | Dudley Sq | Roxbury

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated This is the best building I've seen built in Boston in a few years: a real attention to craft, scale and materials while respecting the historic fabric. And very good to see in the investment this part of the city; Dudley Sq...

Hong Lok House | 11-31 Essex Street | Chinatown

None of them are particularly beautiful in their own right, but this was a big win for Boylston/Essex Street to preserve the sense of scale and rhythm of the original facades. This is exactly what would have saved the Radian from itself.

Portside at Pier One | 29 Marginal Street (Pier 1, Pier 5) | East Boston

Re: Portside at Pier One A 4 story building doesn't overwhelm Maverick, it points to what the square was before and what it should become again. That is exactly the type of development needed in Eastie.

    Fan Pier Developments | Seaport

Any project that has 4 tower cranes rolling at once (and when they're still primarily doing below grade work) is going to fly up. For several million dollars of tower crane rental, the contractor means business.

    Gardner Museum Expansion | Fenway

Re: Gardner Museum to undertake $60 million expansion The magic of the Gardner is entirely on the inside. The outside of the building has always been quite banal. If one were to agree with that (and I'm not sure you do), then I really can't see that it's a giant f you to the original. Like...

South Boston Infill and Small Developments

Re: MacAllen II and all things South Boston Does anyone have any new photos of Old Colony Phase 1 redevelopment (project above)? I happened past it this weekend and it is one of the more impressive redevelopments in Boston given the challenging circumstances. Sort of falls off our mental map...

    315 on A | 315 A Street | Fort Point

Re: 319 A Street Rear What an stunningly myopic worldview. Do you mean apart from being globally recognized for architecture, art, cuisine, nightlife, or its position as the economic engine of South America?

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

You seemed to miss the point of my post and zero in on one sentence. I didn't say that it was the root of the issue, just an observation that urban living in Boston is 'urban lite'. If more residents were actively using the streets and parks 24/7, then we'd have better, more lively spaces. The...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

This had been discussed ad nauseum, but the parks in and of themselves are fine. Not great, but fine. The city needs to fill in any parcel abutting it with density and active uses, and give up on the idea of a continuous greenway and infill specific parcels to knit the fabric back together. It...

One Canal (formerly Greenway Center) | Bullfinch Triangle | West End

Re: Greenway Center (Bulfinch Triangle) There is a big difference between trips to the supermarket and the development of real estate, although given that the latest round of posts had to do with the lack of a supermarket tenant for this site, perhaps it was a clever analogy. A single large...

One Canal (formerly Greenway Center) | Bullfinch Triangle | West End

Re: Greenway Center (Bulfinch Triangle) The architecture is fairly horrific on this. Both the original and the revised version, though the original seemed slightly better. Without excusing the poor architecture that they've come up with, this is a challenging parcel given the multiple vent...

    Gardner Museum Expansion | Fenway

Re: Gardner Museum to undertake $60 million expansion Isn't that half the reason that it was held away from the original building and separated by a 50 foot glass connector, so as to stand apart? Can we clarify what the critique is: That it looks attractive when not seen in photos that show...

    315 on A | 315 A Street | Fort Point

Re: 319 A Street Rear I used to be against this project because it seems absurd to demo an existing warehouse when there is a sea of surface lost surround it, but a friend of mine who has a studio in the 319 front building said that the rear property is beyond repair and been almost entirely...

UMass Boston Developments | Columbia Point | Dorchester

Agreed that Goody Clancy can do better, but what context should they be responding to: the lost cause that is Morrissey Blvd, or the bunker-like brick buildings of the existing campus? Hard to tell from the one rendering if this one will turn out well, but at least its a departure from the rest...

MassDOT Pike Parcels 12 - 15 | Boylston St. and Mass. Ave | Back Bay

Re: Mandarin developers eye Pike parcels for project Boylston and Mass Ave is one of the premier corners of Boston, let's hope that one of these moves forward. Given the confluence of public transit, foot traffic, commercial activity and residential areas nearby, if this isn't profitable, then...

    11 West Broadway

This is a huge missed opportunity; this building should define a rather important corner as the gateway to Southie, but fails miserably to create any sense of arrival. The earlier rendering was a pastiche of disused styles, but it at least acknowledged that the corner was important. At the bare...

Harvard Business School's Tata Hall | Allston

They might like the Ring to connect to Harvard, but the alignment was considerably farther south, crossing the Charles by the BU bridge and running in the rail right of way behind MIT/Vassar Street. I would agree however, that in a perfect world the 66 bus would turn into a subway. Anything...

    Fan Pier Developments | Seaport

A garage of that size would need multiple entrances. For reference 500 Boylston St has 3 entrances/exits for its garage. This is not inherently a flaw, but it's what they then do with the street design that will make/break the project. I haven't seen the Fan Pier plans, but separating the...
