^ I don't work in construction, but I would imagine that having an active job site for one week is far more expensive than having a vacant completed building for a week. Once construction is underway I think they would want to complete the job in as little time as needed.

Perhaps, but there is a serious shortage of construction labor available right now. To build at full speed, you need to spend top dollar to grab labor from other projects (like the Wynn Casino), and that doesn't make sense if you don't have a tenant lined up.

Not to mention, some of the projects we've seen go up recently employed lots of OT or larger crews than normal to get them done super quick. This distorts our perception of how long it "should take", when what we're used to is only possible because of spending boku bucks.

Things like cranes have real dollars per day costs associated with them, so they will schedule those for as short a time frame as possible.

If there is no work for a certain trade, they are not on site, and are not costing money.

As mentioned above, if no client is locked up, there is no need to hurry, as you are not losing revenue buy not being done by a certain date.

You are missing potential tenants though. 121 Seaport won't be in the mix for Reebok, for instance, because the building won't be done soon enough. If it were done even a few months sooner they might be.
Also, on the labor front, the impact of the Wynn Casino is going to get bigger, not smaller, over the next year. A building that's further along would do well to keep ahead of the casino so that it doesn't gobble up the skilled trades they need towards the end of the job.
I'd agree Skanska shouldn't pay OT and such - as Alexandria is on its fully-leased buildings on Binney in Kendall Square for instance - just to finish a building that doesn't have tenants lined up. But there's no reason to dally.

The supply for construction workers/tradesmen will always meet the demand. Yes, labor cost will increase, but trades people will travel from around the country to work on a solid, relatively long term job.

Beeline -- right on the money with some hot from the site pix

Full Disclosure -- In addition to tall cranes -- I get an adrenalin rush from looking at big steel splaying out in all manner of directions.

This project is a classic example of doing stuff you couldn't have done before the age of the finite stress analysis code coupled with the mechanical drawing package

I dont get an adrenaline rush at all, but this is a cool project and a much needed change of pace for the area. We can finally see the outline of the shape of the tower now which is cool to watch progress.

Especially in this shot.

Now that they're past the base this should pick up in pace.

Why is this one moving so slowly?

I'd imagine since they don't have a tenant, they're not too concerned about any timeline. However, it'd make sense for them to speed this up, considering they'll be spending more on construction costs in the long run, and the bitter cold has pretty much arrived.

I can't figure it out either. For the past week and a half they've completely stopped steel installation - and I don't think they've even used the crane at all. They got to about 6 floors of steel, wrapped the bottom three floors, and there's minor work going on inside that wrapping paper.

No idea why they wouldn't just get this thing up and done.
