Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

As i said before, it looks like when i would take the toothpick out of my sandwiches from the regatta deli in worcester and sword fight with it.

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

Sometimes I think calling Boston Dallas-by-the-Sea is an insult to Dallas. Would that Fan Pier building be tolerated even there?

Id say that calling it that is an insult to boston.

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

The only Southern city that remotely reminds me of Boston is Charleston, SC.

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

I think czsz is speaking only of that specific skyline shot, not the city as a whole. In which case I agree with him wholeheartedly.

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

^Well if that is the case, I agree. Fan Pier might as well be Hampton Roads, VA.

Have you ever been to, or spent a good amount of time in Dallas? Boston is a much better city.

^^As I said be before, czsz is speaking about the photo in question, not the city as a whole.

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

Yea and it's played out and annoying.

Make a photoshop and detail how it could be better.

Explain it out like Briv can when he criticises something.

Make a photo compilation of better examples and explain it

Hey czsz what do you think of the new Jets stadium on the upper east side? Let me guess....shit? (ya terrible movie quote by appropriate)

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

Okay.

Here is an example of a better waterfront that is fully within the grasp of the mediocre architects, designers, and businesspeople who have built up the Seaport:

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

Middling (at best) architecture (but then again so were the tenements and brownstones). Great density. Looks eminently livable, and 1000x nicer than what we're getting in the Seaport. Given the FAA restrictions, though, I don't know if it'd be possible there.

Vancouver?

Looks like only 1 or 2 of those buildings are over 20 stories. Massing is better, but it's still a lot of concrete and glass . . .

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

Definitely Vancouver. Canadian ensign on the boat.

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

It's Vancouver. I didn't say it was award winning architecture or pre-20th century Boston quality urbanism. I'm just saying it's much better than what Boston has been building in the last decade, but still very much within the grasp of even its most thickheaded developers and planners.

Here's another one:

Kinda looks like the view from the Common. (1st post)

Second post might look like Fort Point (2nd post)

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

^^You had me with Vancouver, but lost me with these last two images - those are some butt-ugly, relentlessly repetative buildings.

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

Yes, and wouldn't it be nice if the Seaport looked like the view from the Common?

I severely doubt Fan Pier will turn out like Hamburg, but here's hoping its plan gets hijacked, its architects fired, One Marina Park Drive gets demolished, and they start all over again.

Again, this is not the ideal development, but I still think it looks better than the Seaport. At least it's aesthetically coordinated. It looks like it belongs in its home city without feeling dated at the same time. Can you say the same for Fan Pier?

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf)

No...at least not yet...still way too many parking lots to judge, but I agree that One Marina Park is not a promising start.
