I actually like the look of the Pru from far away, but when I'm close to it it reminds me of a style that was popular during the era of the Brady Bunch.

I'd argue that the Pru needs a good bath more than anything, but I'd love if they could "restore" the panels somehow- though that might fall under the facelift/reclad you speak of.

Would/could the Pru ever shine with a good scrubbing? Its so dingy and depressing looking - a little sparkle would really freshen it up. Is it a matte finish under the grime or shiny?

In the case of 3 Columbus Circle and the Edward Stone building next to it, I don't think a reclad was necessary. I actually just learned a couple of weeks ago about the reclad of the Metlife Tower in NYC in the early 60s. I kept wondering why the building looked beautiful in all of the old pictures but was underwhelming upon seeing it in person (and seeing it in recent pictures). Such an architectural crime!

So hideous and an insult to beauty. This is a such a NY thing to do too.

The facade is pretty elaborate when you look at it. I always thought a good cleaning to shine up the silver panels, along with replacement of the faded seafoam ones with a bright teal would make the tower look incredible.

There was once a proposal to rework the Pru into a "whimsical" Post-Modern structure.

I can't find the plans at the moment, but I remember that they've aged like a fine milk. (like nearly all Po Mo architecture)

It actually looks good from this angle they should have put the glass wall on both the skinny sides.

Eh, views that way are compromised by the ooglay Marriott and Westin. Plus that's the south face and you'd be dealing with a bunch more solar heat gain.
