The FleetGarden was just built at the wrong time unfortunately as far as aesthetics go. Everyone was singing it's glories when it hit the market. There has been quite a shift in the design of these places in the last 17 years. The major change being to make them more outwardly appealing and working better with their surroundings. That has also caused major upticks in cost.
For instance (since I worked on the project) the Pru in Newark is a very outwardly good looking building, as well as inside and has been tailored to the new fan (also has the 3rd highest ticket prices in the NHL.) It cost upwards of $375 million mind you.It works well outside and involves the community around it (if you can call it that). I also agree with the above statement about the Xcel center in MN.
Comparing the Gahden and MSG is a silly comparison except when it comes to the hosting sports and being a train station comparo. One is 80 years old or whatever and was designed for boxing matches, while the other is a 90's precast behemoth capitalizing on the insatiable sports fans of Boston. However, whomever said the garden has too little capacity has a bad short term memory of when neither team could fill it. It is average by both NBA and NHL standards. Comparing MSG and the old Garden made sense as they were built for the same purpose and designed by the same brain.
An ESPN zone or CBS scene or whatever other conglomorate sports bar disaster is full on not necessary in this area. This is one of the areas in town that still maintains it's own Boston originality. Now that Hooters and Coyote Ugly are gone, the area is almost free of corporate bars. Hurricane O'Reillys, The Fours (voted best sports bar in america a few years back), Sullivan's, & even the Greatest Bar (another best sports bar in america winner), are establishments any other city would be jealous of. They are always full before, during, and after games, and do quite well on their own on the weekends. So, fake sports bars are not needed here. Doesn't mean the waterfront couldn't benefit.
A few other points have already been covered, but always could use re-iterating.
WNBA is a joke and will never be profitable.
2 sports arenas for hockey and basketball in this town is unnecessary and a waste of cash.
The Knicks suck.
Residents are needed in the area. Build the damn towers in the parking lots.
Neon lights are not needed, but the new Garden signage at street level is welcome, and green and yellow leds for the team playing are nice.
The Garden is pretty damn boring, ugly, and monolithic. But, it will be here for at least another 15 years based on the current 30 year life span of sports facilities. A decent facelift could go a long way. Additional or new materials could help a lot to break the monotony. Opening concourses up to the outside world helps too. Adding windows, or even fake ones to break the exterior monotony would help.
Done for now....
