Boston Department Store Blog

Yes, same Loew's. However, the Loew's Theatres company no longer exists. They merged to become Loews Cineplex, then later went bankrupt and were taken over by AMC. For some reason, AMC has elected to retain the name 'Loews' on some of their properties including the Loews Boston Common and the Harvard Square.

This was Marcus Loew's company, not to be confused with E. M. Loew in Boston who also at one time owned an extensive local chain of movie theatres. The 1959 Globe ad that Charles reproduces in his blog has ads for both (Marcus) Loew's Orpheum and E.M. Loew's Center theatre (which today is the Emperor's Garden restaurant on Washington Street)

This Loews Corporation is still around. They own the Loews Hotels as well as a variety of unrelated insurance and oil and gas businesses. At one point they owned Lorillard Tobacco. They are a descendent of Marcus Loew's enterprise, but they long ago spun off the theatre division.

The Conrad & Chandler ad contains a reminder that department stores used to be open only certain evenings each week:

NIGHT OPENINGS:
Boston - Monday and Wednesday
Belmont - Wednesday and Friday
Northshore - Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

When I first got to Boston, the whole downtown shopping district was open only on those two nights. Other areas had different nights -- in Harvard Square, stores stayed open late only on Thursdays.

Hello, All!!
Just wanted to share a new project with you and hope some of you may want to participate in it.
I am starting the Jordan Marsh Memory Project and here is a bit about it from my new Facebook page:

This blog(http://shoppingdaysinretroboston.blogspot.com/) has been so popular and generated much discussion around many of the stores of the past but one store really has become a true legend for many. Filene’s has many fans that are true to its dear memory….but Jordan Marsh seems to have a wonderful nostalgic aura that surpasses all the others for so many Bostonians. For this reason, I have decided to begin a very special project dedicated just to The Jordan Marsh Company and a key part of this project will be the gathering of as many memories from the public who loved to shop there over the many years it ruled the Boston shopping scene.
The Jordan Marsh Memory Project could become a book or booklet of some type in the future…at this point I am just gathering all the information and research materials I can find about this great store of Boston’s past. I encourage anyone who would like to participate in the project to write to me at:

charles65ofboston@yahoo.com

and share your memories. I am also looking for photos and other memorabilia of Jordan Marsh that could be scanned or sent my way for inclusion in the final product.
This project will take a great deal of time and I am hoping many people will want to share their treasured memories with me thus creating a lasting tribute to this former Boston retailing giant.

Please feel free to write me....More information and a blog update soon!!!

Thanks....Charles:rolleyes:

For a lot of people, that fond memory is of the dome at Shopper's World in Framingham.

Hello, Ron!
I feel that all memories of Jordan Marsh in Boston and in various branch locations should have a place in my tribute project:rolleyes:
I want to gather as much information, memories and memorabilia as I can find.
The dome was so Retro....and now it's gone. Would love some photos of the inside when it was new...newish:rolleyes:

Fingers crossed that the public wants to share their nostalgic treasures with me!!! Charles:)

Charles, out of curiosity, do you ever check out any of the other threads on this forum?

Hello, Slater:)

Yes...as a matter of fact... I love the Boston Skyline thread, Boston shots of the 50's-60's, Hancock of the Day, Cranes Pix, T Photo of the day and have been very impressed with the Paramount Theater updates.

I love this place.

I don't offer as many comments as I would like to....since I feel a bit removed from the action being located in the UK.

But I am fine coping with the past...I did know Boston once upon a time:)

Thanks for asking....I think this is just about the best forum I could imagine being part of. I have tried a few others....none are as "Boston" based at all.

Keep talking....and sharing:)

Charles:)

Gilchrist's of Medford is now a medical building, I believe.
And this confirms that Gilcrhist's of Cambridge was in the now-vacant space under Shaw's in the Porter Square Shopping Center. In my memory this was Decelle's and then Burlington Coat Factory.

Thank you, Ron!!!!
What a memory!!!
I had not been to Shopper's World since about 1970 or 71???
Back then it was still....the place to go outside Boston for a mall experience:)
My early memories of it must be from a trip there one summer in the late 60's and it still had a large fountain in the green near one end. It may still have been doing the "dancing waters" to music which was there from the start in the early 50's. I recall the dome of JM as a child and feeling very small as I walked around under it. I loved the original two level J.G. McCrory's store that was there from the start until the 70's when the chain shut down.
I recall the toys...oh, yes....great toys in that store!!

Thanks again!!!!

Charles:)

Do you happen to have records of those "5 Drawings" that were attached to the 1946 permit?

Hello, I am working on getting the drawings for many plans of various stores in Boston during these "busy" years. Keep visiting the blog....more should be on the way soon, I hope:rolleyes:

Thanks.....Charles:)
