Boston Department Store Blog

Hello, I am working on getting the drawings for many plans of various stores in Boston during these "busy" years. Keep visiting the blog....more should be on the way soon, I hope:rolleyes:

Thanks.....Charles:)

Sweeeeeet. I look forward to them.

Was White's where Lafayette Place is now, or where the Hayward Place parking lot is, or both?

Hey, Ron:)

It's so hard to imagine the way the area looked before all the changes and Lafayette Place was built.
I have posted a photo on my Facebook page that shows the view from the air in the late 1920's. The blue dot is on RH White's roof and the pink dot shows the entrance on Washington Street of BF Keith's now known as The Opera House.
RH White's was more opposite Keith's really....the Paramount would have been at the very edge of the building on the opposite side but had not been built when this shot was taken.
Lafayette Place takes up the space from where JM's annex complex was to where White's whole building was...more or less. Avon St., Bedford St.(the section that went to Washington) and Hayward Place are all gone and used to mark the area for easy location...now it's all a bit fuzzy:)

That update has more info on White's history as well as today's update at:

Hope that helps:)

Thanks! I'd be interested in knowing about other large department stores that were located in neighborhoods outside downtown Boston.

What are the dates of those ads where the store describes itself as 'suburban' ?

Hey, Ron!!
I aim to please and many blog readers are eager for more information on stores of the retro past that were located just outside of Boston, too:)
The ads for today's update are moslty from 1915 to the early 1930's...Roxbury was still a place just "that much" outside of the city:)

Enjoy the update!!!!!! Charles:rolleyes:

Hello, All!!!

I just found out some facts about a store once located near Dudley Square from 1862 until the 1950's. Timothy Smith's was the name and I posted some information and various other goodies including a map to locate the store circa the 1920's.

Come and enjoy a peek at Timothy Smith Company!!

I just added two more articles I located about the Chandler Building on Tremont Street sale and re-use back in the late 1950's.

Enjoy!!! Charles:rolleyes:

Hello, All!!! Happy March!!

Today I have posted a look back on a merger in 1958 Boston...the story of Conrad and Chandler....and how they became one.

Ads, articles, photos...give you an idea of what was behind the merger.

How long did the combined chain last, and what caused its downfall? Where was the Belmont store located, and what is there now?

Also, you mentioned Slattery's which closed in 1957. Where was this store?

Hey, Ron:)
The new combined store lasted until 1972 when it closed all branches including Boston. I shall post a bit more about this in a future update on the blog.
The Belmont location was in Cushing Square.
Slattery's was housed in three connected buildings... part of where "Tremont On the Common" now sits. I shall be posting an update on E.T. Slattery's soon on the blog....they also had other stores....a very nice one was in Coolidge Corner using the street floor of Pelham Hall.
More on Slattery's soon!!!!

Charles:rolleyes:

I'm looking forward to learning what caused the Tremont on the Common disaster to be built.

Hey, Ron....I have a nice collection of items that deal with the end of Slattery's and the start to the "Tremont on the Common" project in the 60's:) I may even toss in some building permits for good measure.

Stay tuned...more on the blog soon!!! Charles:)

Looks like Raymond's was the Building 19 or Ocean State Job Lot of its day.

Hey, Ron:) It would seem so...that was their way of getting the crowds in.

Hello, All!!

The new update on E.T. Slattery's is up on the blog!!!
Slattery's was a long time retail resident of Tremont Street and with its end in 1957...made "Tremont on the Common" possible.

The blog contains the history of Slattery's in Boston plus a bit about each of the branches located in Wellesley and Brookline. The Brookline one was very notable and well recalled by the town residents long after it shut.

I include ads, articles and photos....plus a building permit from the early 60's giving way to the big Tremont project that would cause a fair amount of controversy in the years to follow.

Come and have a look:rolleyes:

Thank you so much for this. Now I can understand how Tremont-on-the-Common came to be.

Have you written about Coleman's before? I don't know anything about them and am curious now.
