Boston Department Store Blog

Thanks, Ron!!! I do aim to please and I have had requests to investigate that area of Tremont Street and present the how and why of what is there now and to recall what was there once upon a time.
I will put something together for Coleman's as well...it was located for many years in the handsome building with the large columns in the photos next to Slattery's.
Much More to come:rolleyes:

Keep visiting for updates:)

Charles....

Hello, All!!

The new update on E.T. Slattery's is up on the blog!!!
Slattery's was a long time retail resident of Tremont Street and with its end in 1957...made "Tremont on the Common" possible.

The blog contains the history of Slattery's in Boston plus a bit about each of the branches located in Wellesley and Brookline. The Brookline one was very notable and well recalled by the town residents long after it shut.

I include ads, articles and photos....plus a building permit from the early 60's giving way to the big Tremont project that would cause a fair amount of controversy in the years to follow.

Come and have a look

Hello, All!!!
A super blog reader sent to me a wonderful treasure. He is the grandson of the real Unkle Eph. His mother wrote a university paper in 1962 all about her father....the real Unkle Eph.
Raymond's...folks all had reactions to this one of a kind store......liked it....loved it....hated it....But it was a unique place and a true Boston original!!
Find out about the man who was the face and voice of Raymond's for many years....Unkle Eph:rolleyes:

Thanks, Ron!!!
C. F. Hovey's was a store name my mom and nana spoke of long ago ,but I had no real knowledge of it at all other than it was merged into JM and my nana sometimes worked in the old "Hovey Building" in the late 40's and early 50's before it was all torn down. So it was fun to uncover the history of this old Boston store and share it on the blog!!

Charles:rolleyes:

Hello, All!!

Today we look back at Boston's first department store...C.F. Hovey's!!

Hard to imagine walking into Jordan Marsh and buying a bicycle, but there it is.

Ron, Just had to share this!!!
My second bike was bought at Jordan Marsh in Boston in the early 1970's...they had many to pick from, it was great!!
The sporting goods had just moved to the 1949-1950's "new building" but the toys and hobby section remained over in the Annex, the new and improved Avon Street Bridge connected the two departments more or less.

I am living proof that you could buy a bike in JM:rolleyes:

Enjoy!!! Charles:cool:

Hello, All!!!

Happy September!!

The blog features an update from Aug- Sep. 1949 and we look at back to school shopping in retro Boston.

Lots of neat finds....come see

Charles

Great update, Charles! Very interesting. Schraffts predates me so I had no idea it had so many locations around the city.

I do remember the Bailey's ice cream building, or at least, the sign in front of it, pretty much next door to the Schraffts building. Or was it further up Bolyston?

I always wished they would re-open the Bailey's. Ice cream parlors, even high-end ones, must be difficult to make work, since to many, visits are a special treat. Oh, and then there's winter, of course.

Thanks so much!!!
I may just have to do further updates to include other great places in retro Boston that were fun to eat and snack in...keep visiting!!!

Hello All!!!
Another email...a request....and a new hunt for retro Boston goodies.

Let's DO Lunch.....at Schrafft's....a retro Boston spot to eat, drink and fill your sweet tooth!!!

Come and look back with me

Charles

I disagree. High-end everything is in right now. High end coffee - Starbucks. High end froyo - Pinkberry. The latter is the most important indicator. Pinkberry is taking Boston/Cambridge/Wellesley by storm right now. I don't think a high-end ice cream parlor would be such a tough business. Bostonians make more than the rest of the country does anyways.

Also Charles, I really enjoyed this post. The plans were a great addition too. I really would love to see plans for more of the buildings you write about. =)

Probably true, high-end is gold. I like the idea of low-end, too. How about a place where you don't have to spend $2.99 for two pieces of bread and a slice of American cheese and where coffee is only a buck with unlimited refills, somewhere in downtown Boston.

Thanks.....I would like to find more building plans....always a great plus to any blog post I do:rolleyes:
