So are they digging to bedrock or to some base foundation already within the Pru complex?

well seeing as this was once the river the bedrock would be quite a ways down.

The "river" was never very deep and the Back Bay itself was mostly exposed land at low tide. What I mean is will they drive new foundations or build on the existing complex?

None of the low-rise portions were ever built to support more than themselves, so new foundation it is. I have to imagine it'll look very similar to the Mandarin Oriental's construction (for those whose memories goes back that far).

Excavation footprint is coming out basically to the sidewalk, flush with the front of the convention center and Mandarin. I'm wondering if that's consistent with the renders that show the maintained (diminished) plaza? Otherwise it means that the plaza will cover part of the excavation and I'm not sure what the reason for the would be.

^Will there be parking under this building? If so, I could see the garage going all the way to the edges of the plaza, up to the boundary with the sidewalk, in which case the plaza will be merely the "roof" of the garage.

My brain is hurting trying to remember what was there before the Mandarin. That was about the time I cleared out of town.

It was a Ring Road fragment and loading area for the duck boats. A glorified driveway.

I'm interested in this too. Does anyone have a picture looking down Fairfield?

^^how do I get these pictures to work?

^ With Flickr you gotta pull the image URL not from the main picture page but from the "All sizes" page. It's weird.

So instead of flickr.com/photos/128559787@N05/15588901698 it should look more like farm8.staticflickr.com/7577/15588901698_a7f4f36706_b.jpg

And of course you need to put tags around it.

And thank you for these, nm88. I was having a hard time remember just how lousy the setup was even though I walked by here a billion times to get to Shaws.

EDIT: KZ beat me to the punch.

Also, in flickr, if you click Share, and select BBCode you can directly copy what's in the field into this message board. Be sure to adjust the size (the text in the box below will automatically update) accordingly.

oh ok thanks!

The first one is 2002, the second two are 2005.

Weird seeing the abortive Planet Hollywood building when it was nearly new. I remember regularly walking past the old parking lot it replaced when I went to the old Charette on Boylston.
