Boston Skyline Photos

Love the frost where the trees are still in morning shadow, and then the trees are bare in the sun.

A winter edition of my Renaissance Garage panoramas... Freezing up there today, but totally worth it. Look at all the cranes!

That panorama is about the most dynamic view I have ever seen of Boston. Great photo.

Police officer hassled the hell out of me for this next set.

That first pic is incredible!

Why was the officer hassling you? Where are these taken?

Was an LNG Tanker coming through before/after your set? I talked to several people who've been harassed by police for taking pictures when one's on its way through the harbor.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus my ID had the wrong address on it, and it was incredibly cold so I was having trouble functioning. Lots of things going wrong. The tanker was leaving as I arrived.

Datadyne it's taken from a park in East Boston. Looks like it's called "Lo Presti Park". Awesome view but don't go when there is an LNG tanker or you will be interrogated!

That's so ridiculous. It's a public park and photography is not a crime.

The next time please do not let the thug wearing the blue uniform get away with his bullying.

Whip out your phone and record the interaction with the cop. As long as you are not hiding that you are recording the conversation, in a public setting with a public employee, it has been well-established that there is no illegal wiretap. Ideally use an app such as Qik that uploads in real-time to remote servers so that even if the thug illegally seizes your phone, the video is safe and sound.

You: "Am I being detained?"
Cop: "No" --> Then carry on
Cop: "Yes" --> Ask, and make sure it's being recorded, "Are you saying that it is illegal to photograph from a public park?"

Every time you acquiesce to a thug cop you are making life more difficult for other photographers.

You are under no obligation to produce ID when not driving a car.

Ask if you are free to go or just walk away. The is no requirement to identify yourself in Mass (assuming you aren't driving). Even if they detain you, you can refuse to answer (Fourth Amendment) until speaking with a lawyer. Best thing is to just move along without engaging.

Just curious, DZ -- Boston Police (from the station two blocks away) or State Police?

(Nice pics, BTW)

I think he was East Boston police. I could feel him casing me during the entirety of the 50-something pics I took. He intercepted me as I was walking back. It was literally about 10 degrees and my hands were frozen, and I was trying to show him that I didn't take pics of the LNG tanker but the camera was on the wrong setting and I was struggling with it. I asked him twice why he was questioning me and he said he was "doing his job." He then "escorted" me down the street to my car, saw my bumper sticker, and said "Oh you really do go to UNC, have a nice day."

All I wanted were some nice skyline pics from a public park at 3 in the afternoon.

There's no such thing as the "East Boston police." Either he was BPD from Area A, District 7, or MSP assigned to a Port Authority protective detail.

Captain McKormick frequents community meetings in East Boston. The next time I see him, I'll ask him about this incident.

… and I was trying to show him that I didn't take pics of the LNG tanker …

Except that it is entirely legal to take as many photos of you want of said tanker as long as you're on public property.

It's ok. I'd rather it just be left alone. No harm, no foul, and I can go back to my anonymous life of enjoying skyscrapers and taking pictures.
