BU Development Thread

I went to BU and I wouldn't donate my mid-90's collection of milk pogs to that overpriced diploma farm....

I find this confusing that you decided to include BU (I am assuming you included BU as part of being an alumnus) in your handle while bashing our school as a diploma mill at the same time.

I get the not-donate part, most of us seem to have long kept that policy regardless of the feeling to the school. Just not the bashing while taking that handle.

R.O.U.S.'s. And roaches galore. Shut the lights off at closing time and the creatures of the night would appear in numbers.

If it's improved in the last 12 years, great. I don't know what they would've done to clean that place spic-and-span and flush out all the hiding spots in that old building, though. It was that rampant. Every once in awhile I'd see something scampering about mid-dinner shift. Myles and Shelton for damn sure. Never saw anything at Towers.

I was the one closing. No creatures of the night to be had.

When did you live there? Your description matches my recollection, but I was there a long time before F-Line. In fact, I lived right above the alley on the second floor, and while we made great sport of watching the rats, and scaring them with high powered flashlights, they never seemed prepared to invade the building. Lots of great memories in that place, it saddens me to hear it referred to as a dump. I'm glad your experience was more like mine.

Lived: 2006-2008
Worked: 2006-2009

But put me in the no donation party, even if I did find the experience to be rat and roach free. Inside the buildings anyway. Did see a rat on bay state once, and the kenmore pedestrian island was in fact home to at least a quarter billion of them. At least. The size of large dogs.

I think the administration, even with the new president, is pretty bad at spending their money wisely.

yea I know...I created the handle when I still had some pride in my alma mater and I also use it as a mnemonic device in case I ever forget my user name...

I lived in Sleeper Hall for my 1st two years and then South Campus and Student Village for the remaining two...loved Sleeper and that whole area...great place for underclassmen

They did it to themselves with me, landing themselves on the never-donate-even-if-I-become-a-billionaire shitlist. I got a call years ago from the Alumni donations office when I was working as a poor office temp. This was during Silber's return to power as Acting Prez. for Life before all their financial shennanigans finally forced him out of power, so I was a solid "no" before then. I explain to the somewhat pushy staffer that I'm not exactly in financial position to make a donation at this time.

"Well, then. Maybe you might consider having your name taken off the alumni rolls if that's the case."

[*stunned*] "Uhh...is that a threat?"

[*coyly*] "No, no. I'm just saying that if you're not interested in supporting your alma mater maybe you'd prefer not to be listed among alumni..."

"Are you implying that I may possibly be at risk of getting 'expelled' as an alumni for not donating???"

"You can read into that what you..."

[*click*]

Changed all my contact preferences to "DO NOT CALL" after that episode. I'm sure that was just some rogue student asshole mangling the donor script, but...never again. EVER.

HAHAHAHA...Getting expelled from the alum roll. That's golden. Must have been in the glory days of telemarketing.

Bubb -- eventually you will realize that you get / got out of your alma mater what you put into it

If you just partied for 4 years -- well then you just wasted your, your parents or the taxpayers money

If you realize a few decades down the road that you did actually get something out of your college years -- well you might just think of re-joining the active alumni

My MIT class' history of giving -- was very very light for the first 15 to 20 years -- since our 25th -- we've been mostly around the average for classes in the 70's

No gazilionaires so far -- though we do have a good number of millionaires (present company excluded)

BU is not MIT -- but it is still a good university -- and today it is far better than when my father attended just after WWII

I was good friends with a good friend's father who attended BU in the 1950's, commuting from Maine every day. (!)

He got so many speeding tickets that his license to drive in the Commonwealth was revoked. He had to write a personal letter to the Governor asking to be allowed to drive to and from school.

Hilarious!

Hooray, more spending on sports! Just what BU needs! Nothing says "great academics" like dropping millions on chasing a ball around.

Edit: Oh boy, a new parking garage too! I know when I have $10m laying around, the first thing I do is allocate it to parking needs.

Yes, removing surface parking is a good thing, but check out that streetwall. Wont exactly liven up the neighborhood.

Would have made more sense to make the first floor offices or classrooms or whatever, and have the field on top.

Theyre going to be tearing down some buildings as well. Anyone know why BU let these buildings deteriorate to such a terrible condition in the first place?

This is essentially WIT's plan too for the new Sweeney Field on what is now the Parker St. lot. Garage below, field on top.

The field will be a nice addition to the school, but why can't they build it a ground level? Put the underground garage deeper. Right now it's just another example of BU(built ugly) architecture.

I've been lurking for a couple of years now.. time for me to chime in again:

This makes absolutely zero sense and is a total waste of space.

There should be classrooms or other university use directly below the field, with garage space down lower.

The building(s) being torn down are these giant 1920's era storage sheds. Once used as warehouses, they were bought by BU at some point and used by the ROTC for training and the marching bands for practice. Not a huge loss here.

What is really needed in this area is more housing, not sports garbage.

I'm a little confused about the location of this field. Isn't this the same location as an existing field? Or is this a block or two from that? And I don't mean Nickerson/Braves Field, but the other one, that is used for, well, I don't know, but is next to the Physical Plant HQ.

Regarding alumni giving and such, I'm of the opinion that people who work too hard to denigrate their alma mater are really depreciating their own value on the job market. I'd also point out that you can engage in targeted giving. I sometimes will specify that a donation most go to the community service center, for example. There are lots of good things at any school worth supporting. And all support, even in small amounts, will improve the reputation and school ranking.

^This is due west of the West Campus dorms on what is currently a parking lot and warehouse building used for band and ROTC. It is adjacent to the Star Market parking lot. This is not replacing Nickerson Field.

In this rendering it appears that the field entrance is at ground level (on Babcock Street):

Ah, okay. Interestingly, the field I was thinking of isn't there anymore, so Google tells me. I believe it was where the tennis building is located. I wonder when that happened.

The Track and Tennis Center opened about 10 years ago.
